RS/CW ducks at Ouray; Stewart Lake

This morning at Ouray NWR there were a pair of lesser scaup, 5 american
wigeon, and a pair of ring-necked ducks. They were seen toward the
eastern end of the Leota Bottom unit. While these species are more or
less common during the winter, they are classified with "Rare Summer"
status on the Utah list.

Stewart Lake Waterfowl Management Area, formerly Stewart Lake Bird
Refuge, is as dry as bone and seems at present to be almost better
suited as thrasher habitat than waterfowl habitat - although - I did see
a mallard swimming in a small mud puddle. Stewart Lake WMA, when
inundated, is worth a visit. You'll find it in Jensen, 13 miles east of
Vernal, about 0.75 miles south of Highway 40 on 9500 East. It lies
immediately adjacent to the west bank of the Green river. If you cross
the Green River bridge on Highway 40 you've gone too far east.
