I realized early this (?go birding?) morning that I
could no longer (?go birding?) resist the subliminal
(?go birding?) messages that Kris, Pomera, Julie, et
al (?go birding?) were sending to me (?go birding?).
To resist was futile, so I went birding!
My first stop was at the Henefer Sage Grouse lek.
Yes, the grouse were there, as was about half the
population of the Wasatch Front (well, maybe I am
exaggerating, but only slightly!) I watched the males
try to impress each other as well as any females that
were nearby. This is the 4th year I?ve been to this
lek, and I still enjoy it as much now as I did the
first time!
The short drive to East Canyon reservoir was also
productive. I had hoped to encounter some loons on
the water, but did not locate any. But I did find a
small flock of Vesper Sparrows, and a couple Violet
Green Swallows that were flying near the inlet of the
reservoir. There were several Common Mergansers in
the same area. A Belted Kingfisher was also located,
on the opposite side of the reservoir, near the dam.
The sewage treatment ponds in Henefer were pretty
quiet, although there were 2 Sandhill Cranes
patrolling the mud dike of the center pond.
Near Echo Reservoir I saw my first Osprey of the year.
The reservoir held a large assortment of ducks,
including wigeons, pintails, scaup, etc. A solitary
Clark?s Grebe looked out of place amongst a flock of
goldeneyes.
Rockport Reservoir produced several Common Loons,
Mountain Bluebirds, and a wrestling match between a
merganser and a medium sized fish (the merganser won).
Near the center of downtown Oakley were 4 Turkey
Vultures sunning themselves between the recurring snow
flurries. When you see TV?s , summer can not be far
behind!!
The wetlands reclamation site below Jordanelle Dam
gave me looks at Cinnamon and Green Wing Teal.
Behind ?The Other End? in Heber, made famous for
hosting Bobolinks in the summer, was my first Savannah
Sparrow of the year.
It felt good to get out birding in the (multiple
choice quiz!!!) a-snow, b-rain, c-sun, d-all of the
above!!!
