On Tuesday, October 22, Merrill Webb and I went to
Ouray National Wildlife Refuge primarily for the purpose of trying to see an
American Bittern. After search for 3+ hours we were finally
successful!n It was a beautiful day to be outdoors looking at birds.
In addition to the bittern we saw over 50 species of birds. Merrill was
able to locate more, since his hearing is better than mine. Birds seen
included the following:
Pied-billed Grebe
Horned Grebe
Eared Grebe
Western Grebe
Clark's Grebe
American White Pelican
Double-crested Cormorant
American Bittern
Great Blue Heron
Black-crowned Night Heron
Canada Goose (large flock, which also
included minima)
Green-winged Teal
Mallard
Northern Pintail
Northern Shoveler
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Canvasback
Redhead
Bufflehead
Common Merganser
Ruddy Duck
Northern Harrier
Golden Eagle
American Kestrel
Merlin
Ring-necked Pheasant

Many of the ducks were seen at the neighboring
Pelican Lake. In addition, Merrill saw the following:
