California Gulls ... in a cherry tree?

I witnessed a flock of about three dozen California Gulls perched in a
cherry tree gorging themselves on sweet cherries in Pleasant Grove
tonight (around 450 W. and 1100 S.).  There were another hundred gulls
perched on nearby housetops waiting for their turns.

Is this common behavior?  I have never seen gulls perch in trees before.
It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
