Julie and I were treated to a wonderful birding day on
Wednesday. We started out at the Lindon Marina and worked our way south as
far as Goshen. We saw over 60 species so I will post our favorites and
some "firsts." We couldn't begin to count the number of
White-faced Ibis and Yellow-headed
Blackbirds. Lots of Western Kingbirds and
Ring-necked Pheasants, too.
In the fields south of the Geneva cooling ponds, we saw our
first Violet-green Swallows with most of the other
swallows mixed in. In the line of trees at River Lane leading to the
beach, we saw our first Yellow Warbler, lots of singing
American Goldfinches and Yellow-rumped
Warblers and down near the beach area, our first Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers. On the way to Lincoln Beach, lots of Snowy
Egrets, a Swainson's Hawk and an
Osprey. At Lincoln Beach, we relocated the
Semipalmated Plovers that Bryan reported along with
Sanderlings and Western Sandpipers.
Also, a Lark Sparrow and a Spotted
Sandpiper. At LeBarron Point, we found four beautiful,
clacking Sandhill Cranes. In the Goshen area, there was a
Golden Eagle, a Long-billed Curlew and a
couple of trees filled with Cedar Waxwings. At Tim
Green's pond a nice assortment of birds including Wilson's
Phalaropes and a beautiful singing Savannah
Sparrow.
What a day! The only other bird we had anticipated
seeing was a Cattle Egret, but there were none to be found. Oh well, I
guess that gives us reason to go out another day.
