Another Northern Pygmy Owl

Jack Clark and I headed up to Alta this afternoon to look for rosy
finches (which we didn't find). As we entered Little Cottonwood Canyon,
we were wondering if we might be lucky enough to see the Northern Pygmy
Owl that Colby reported seeing on the fly a few days ago. About five
minutes later, I saw something suspicious on the top of a conifer and
asked Jack to pull over (okay, so it was more like I threatened bodily
harm if he didn't). I hopped out of the car, grabbed the scope and ran
down the road to where I saw the bird. And yes, indeed, it was a
Northern Pygmy Owl. Just as Jack arrived, the owl flew down to the next
tree. We couldn't have been more than 50 yards away, had the scope
cranked up to full power and had the most wonderful lighting conditions
you could imagine. It was a fabulous look. We could see every detail
of this beautiful little owl.

The bird was seen about half a mile down canyon from the Maybird
Avalanche Area. Beware, however, as there isn't much of a shoulder in
this area and it is difficult to get completely off the road.
