possible SCARLET TANAGER in SL County

There was a post by Carol Davis to birtalk this morning as someone reported they
had seen a SCARLET TANAGER at Valley View Cemetery, located on 4100 South, and
about 4000 West. I decided it would be worthwile to look for this bird. I
however, am left with a question, did the reporter see a male or female bird?
I assumed male, and went out looking. I did not see a male SCARLET TANAGER in
the hour I had to look, but did get a fleeting glimpse at what may have been a
femlae SCARLET TANAGER. Here is what I could tell from the 3 second glimpse at
the bird. It was an overall dull yellow, with greenish-yellow on the back.
The wings were dark, not dark black, but dark and DID NOT SHOW ANY BARS! I
cannot say with 100% cerainty that this bird was a Scarlet Tanager as it flew
off to the west out of the cemetary.

A few words of caution if you go to look for this bird. The first is that it is
a cemetery so please be respectful of the grounds. 2nd, there are numerous
Western Tanagers and American and Lesser Goldfinches in the trees. I counted
at least 13 female Western birds, and 3 dozen Finches. The male Western song
is the same or close enough to the Scarlet, so that if there is a male,
checking each singing bird would be worthwhile.

I started on the westside at the 4100 south entrance, and worked my way to the
eastside, along the road. The bird in question was seen about 150 yards from
teh exit on the eastside in the trees bordering the canal.

If anyone is interested in going out tomorrow morning to look, I plan on going
again, I need to get better looks and have some more time to see what I can
find.

GOOD BIRDING
