LBBG - Bountiful Landfill; misc. stuff

Hi all,

I was surprised (and maybe it's actually a good thing considering a landfill is not the most desirable place to go birding) to see that no one had reported gulls, etc. from the Bountiful Landfill this winter. Anyway, I went there today and saw a third-winter Lesser Black-backed Gull (the 2nd winter bird from last year?) among the California, Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. I did not see any Thayer's or Glaucous type gulls, and there were only a couple (literally) of non Ring-billed first winter gulls present in the entire dump...very odd! However, there was one first winter Herring type gull that was interesting to say the least (I'll leave it at that for now) so I'll probably head back up there later this week.

Also, sveral birders this fall reported Cackling Goose in Utah, but I do not believe any of them mentioned the subspecies with which they thought the bird(s) belonged to. Because there are several subspecies possible in Utah I would encourage you to report the subspecies you observe so that all of us can begin to learn when, how many and which subspecies of Cackling Goose move through our region.

Let me know if you want to go birding!

Colby
