Lytle Ranch and environs

My wife and I visited Lytle Ranch this past Tuesday and enjoyed seeing some
of the birds that frequently occur there such as White-winged Doves, Verdin,
Black Phoebe, Phainopela, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Gambel's Quail, Bewick's
Wren, Northern Mockingbird, Lazuli Bunting, Lesser Goldfinch, probable female
Summer Tanager, and the prize for us, a Black Hawk busy gathering twigs for a
nest. The latter was observed from the lane that leads north through the
Ranch and looking west at large Cottonwoods about 200 yards away where the
bird was moving about. Large logs are lying along the lane at the point we
were looking from. If questers get to the little Terry family monument along
the lane they have gone a bit too far. On the road into the ranch a pair of
Scott's Orioles were seen. At a lovely riparian area below the Gunlock Dam a
beautiful male Summer Tanager was singing its little heart out certainly
getting our attention but we don't know about prospective mates. In St.
George the first Bullock's Oriole of the season was seen along with numerous
Black-Chinned and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds and a very large hummer that was
seen all too briefly. A Magnificent?? We'll never know, alas!
The joys of spring birding. Hugh Gillilan
