trumpeter swan project needs your help

Project Title: Winter Translocation of Trumpeter Swan Cygnets in
Southeastern Idaho

Summary: Past efforts to translocate wintering trumpeter swans in
southeastern Idaho have relied on visual observations of neck-collared
swans to measure success. A rigorous three-year study, including
radio-telemetry, will attempt to determine if winter translocation of
cygnets is an effective way to increase distribution of trumpeter swans
wintering in southeastern Idaho.

Objective: The objective of this project is to test the success of
translocating wintering cygnet trumpeter swans from Harriman State Park in
Idaho to Bear River in Franklin County, Idaho. Developing a successful
translocation technique could have significant value to manage the Rocky
Mountain Population of trumpeter swans by dispersing them to less crowded,
yet suitable wintering grounds, and possibly improving the condition of
spring habitat also used during the winter.

Idaho Department of Fish and Game needs your help to monitor these marked
cygnets. To date we have trapped 61 cygnet trumpeter swan cygnets at
Harriman State Park. All of these cygnets have a green neck collar with
white lettering. Half of these cygnets also have a pink wing and have
been moved to the Bear River near Preston. Please be on the lookout for
any cygnets with green neck collars or any other trumpeter swans with neck
collars. We have observed 10 of the 95 cygnets collared last year at
Harriman State Park in various places already this winter, including Bear
River, Swan Valley, Jackson, WY, and of course Island Park.

This project is a cooperative effort by Idaho Department of Fish and Game,
US Fish and Wildlife Service, Harriman State Park, Bureau of Reclamation,
and others. Please contact Lauri Hanauska-Brown at
lhanausk@idfg.state.id.us with swan observations....thank you.
