Web Site Mail - Kentucky Warbler

Date: May 30, 2002
Subject: Kentucky Warbler, Sheep Creek Canyon
Email_Address: russellnorvell@utah.gov

Apologies for the late posting, we're just back from the
field.

After-second-year male Kentucky Warbler, banded and photographed,
5/25/02, Sheep Creek Geological Loop (about 8 mi south of Manila,
UT on route 44). Bird was captured ~100 yds upstream from Cascade
Campground. Over 100 spp on the day. Other warblers seen/banded
in the lower canyon included Orange-crowned, MacGillivray's, Wilson's,
Black-throated Gray, Virginia's, Yellow-rumped (Aududon's race),
Yellow, and Yellow-breasted Chat (a Townsend's was also seen in the
Pondersa stand near Colton Creek Guard Station, toward the top of
the geologic loop road, in the company of several Pygmy
Nuthatches). Most local breeders are back; Bushtit are on eggs. No
Black-headedXRose-breasted Grosbeaks this visit, nor did we see the
Lewis's Woodpecker (often seen along Hwy 44 in the burned Ponderosa
snags at the Ponderosa/Lodgepole habitat edges, in the area between
(west of) the Red Canyon Overlook turnoff and (east of) the fishing
ponds).

Cheers
