We saw several interesting birds this past holiday weekend.
Saturday morning, Nov. 10, we saw the Harris' Sparrow on the Provo/Jordan
River Parkway. It was feeding on the path with a flock of White-crowned
Sparrows, across from the Osprey nesting platforms north of the Utah Lake
State Park marina, as previously described.
On Sunday, Nov. 11, we visited Devil's Canyon (about 10 miles south of
Monticello). One Acorn Woodpecker was busy working the pines on both
sides of the highway. Other birds included Pygmy and White-breasted
Nuthatches,Western Bluebirds, and a small flock of Red Crossbills. A
Northern Shrike was seen along the highway just north of the Canyon.
On Monday morning, Nov. 12, we saw 25-30 Gray-crowned Rosy Finches flying
about the area of Landscape Arch, in Arches National Park. These are
common winter birds in the Park, but they seemed out of place in the
sunny, 751 desert weather.
