Gary:

To reach Salt Creek WMA, drive west from Corinne (in Box Elder Cty.) on =
Rte. 83 for ~ 4 miles. Turn right when you see a sign for the landfill. =
Drive north (to 6800 N I think) and turn left at the landfill sign. =
Drive to the end of the paved road. The landfill is on your left, SCWMA =
is on your right. It's one of the places shown on the birding map for =
Northern Utah (which is down in my car at the moment).

You can drive back south to Rte. 83 on a dirt road on the west side of =
Little Mountain, looking in at the various access roads into the WMA =
that are currently open during duck-hunting season. To visit the Public =
Hunting Grounds, turn right for a short distance after you reach Rte. 83 =
and then turn left at the signs. Far off to the south, you can see the =
Bear River MBR maintenance building and the Bear River Club buildings.

The swans are visible in the Waterfowl Rest Area that you can get close =
to by driving south on a dirt road off Rte. 83 to a Chevron gas pumping =
station, before you reach the Hunting Grounds.

There's not a lot of birds to see at this time of year except for many =
N. Harriers and the other species I mentioned. It's duck hunting =
season, so it would be best to visit during the week if possible.

There are probably more swans at Bear River MBR, but the last time I was =
there, they were very far away in Unit 1. Unit 2 was still dry.

If you pass through Brigham City, be sure to visit the Museum Gallery at =
the NE corner of Forest St. and 300 W to see a spectacuar display of =
photographs entitled 'Scenic Utah', featuring pictures by some of Utah's =
most famous photographers. It runs to about Dec. 15. (You will even =
find a couple of mine.) Hours are T-F: 10 am-6 pm; Sat: 1-5 pm.

A dark morph Rough-legged Hawk was seen on Sat. Nov. 10 (~8 a.m.) at =
Compton Knoll in the Salt Creek WMA.

Two Great Egrets were seen (and photographed) near the entrance to =
the Public Hunting Grounds, on the south side of Route 83.

Approximately 200 Tundra Swans were in the protected WATERFOWL REST =
AREA. Those birds are smart readers!
