On wednesday evening I drove down to Bridal Veil Falls to try and see =
the Black Swifts.
As before I stood directly in front of the falls and waited but there =
were very few birds there. Again as before, I noticed quite a few birds =
off to the east. This time however, I headed in that direction pronto. =
It was the right decision because way up high near Upper Falls was a =
large flock of swifts. There were at least 50 or so!
Unfortunatley, it was a real bear to try and distinguish the Black from =
the Wht-throated which I know is typical. I spent a good hour at neck =
breaking angles on my scope to hopefully make out the difference. I saw =
many with white throats and several without white throats. I also =
thought that I noticed a slightly different flight pattern. Were these =
Black Swifts? That would take an educated person and never having seen =
one before makings it even more difficult for me to say. I know it is =
often difficult to see the white on the White-throated.=20
Since this is a lifer I'm more conservative to call it. This bird may =
have to wait until next year.
Does anyone have an comments or feedback as to what I should focus on =
for next time.
Letitia
