Lynn and I went to Ouray NWR hoping to see the WRSA today. It hadn't =
been reported as being seen in over a week, so I had a little =
apprehension. But I'm glad we made the trip!!! We located them!! I =
parked at the "pond" that they had been spotted in, but we could not =
find them. I decided to drive past the end of the pond, turn around and =
drive to the other end, hoping to see them, if they were even still at =
Ouray. Shortly after turning around, 11 sandpipers took to the air and =
circled around the pond. As they circled, I got to see the white =
rumps!!! Nine birds went to the north end of the pond, but 2 came south =
and landed just opposite of where we were parked!!! Very cooperative =
birds!!! We got some very good looks, they turned and posed so we could =
see them from several different angles, then they disappeared into the =
grasses. =20
We stopped in Heber and looked for the Bobolinks (or as my wife and I =
were joking, the Irish birds Bob O'Links). Almost the same story! =
Drove to the west end of the lane, got a couple of glimpses at birds =
that "might" have been the Bobolinks, but they were flying low and =
dropped into the tall grass before we could ID them. Then about halfway =
back along the lane, a solitary bird started flying in our direction--- =
yep it was a bobolink!!! Flew right up to a fence post maybe 30 feet =
away. Then a 2nd male flew up and landed 2 fence posts down from the =
first!! Outstanding looks!! I was even able to get a picture of the 2 =
birds.
The Duchesne ponds were relatively quiet compared to a month ago!! =
There was only a couple of Wilson's Phalaropes, where there had been =
~300 a month ago, and no warblers.
All in all though, a pretty good day!! We totaled 41 species for the =
day, including Lifer #186 for me!!

Bruce
