I told my wife all kinds of great things about the Audobon trip to the =
East Canyon lek (Morgan County) last week, and persuaded her that she =
really NEEDED to see the Sage Grouse in their pre-mating ritual!! So =
she got herself out of bed at 4:45 this morning, and we hit the road by =
5:30. Of course you know the rest of the story!! We saw 2 Sage Grouse =
standing in the fresh snow, and they sure didn't seem to be interested =
in any strutting or drumming!!! Drats!!!
She was able to hear the loons on East Canyon Resevoir, so she partially =
forgave me. (I've got me a super wife and friend!!!) By the time we =
finished breakfast (which WAS as good as it was when we were there 9 =
days ago!!) we were ready to go again.
We rounded out the day by visiting Bear River Bird Refuge (Box Elder =
County). There we located my first Long Billed Curlews (hurray!!) and =
Lynn found a Great Egret near the corrals where the pavement ends. To =
say we got good looks was an understatement!!! We were able to watch it =
for 5 minutes, and the road took us to within 10 feet or so of this =
magnificent bird!!! It was only after we started back down the road =
that we realized that we hadn't taken any photos of it. Quick turn =
around and returned to the corral, but it had completely vamoosed!!! =
Kodak's Law!!!
We logged 43 species today including White Faced Ibis, Double Crested =
Cormorants, Western Scrub Jay, Sandhill Cranes, Pipits, Western Grebes, =
Forster's Terns, Black Necked Stilts (my first of the season), Marbled =
Godwits (ditto), Greater Yellowlegs, oodles of Pelicans, and I think I =
saw 2 Least Sandpipers, but I won't add them to my list as I sure would =
have appreciated another opinion!!! (I took along my 8" astronomical =
telescope as an experment and located the sandpipers at 80X, but still =
not quite sure!!)
While leaving the refuge, guess what we were treated to be able to see =
again? Yep, the Great Egret had returned and this time I had my camera =
ready!!! Hopefully I wasn't so excited that I didn't hold the camera =
steady!!!
It turned out being a GREAT day!!!! =20
