Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
Black and white warbler with a striking chestnut rufous (chestnut) stroked side, below the wing. Unique black and white facial pattern with a golden crown. I never really got a look at the back but didn't need to as identification of a male of this species isn't complicated.

Song or call & method of delivery: Heard first, it took me a couple rounds of hearing the song before I thought it was a Chestnut-sided. At first hearing I only new it was something unusual. I didn't believe myself until I got visual confirmation, given the rareness of finding this species.
Behavior: Singing high up above trail on an elevated dead branch. I did use a recording to try and entice the bird closer. He was completely immune or just oblivious to played song. He never came in closer or cared about my presence.
Habitat: Mixed oak and big-tooth maple forest.
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Other warblers, but nothing really similar.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
My 4th sightings of this species in Utah.
