(Description:)
Field Marks and Identifying Characteristics: |
Black and white warbler with a striking chestnut rufous (chestnut)
stroked side, below the wing. Unique black and white facial pattern with
a golden crown. I never really got a look at the back but didn't need to
as identification of a male of this species isn't complicated. (see photos) |
| Song or call & method of delivery: | Heard first, it took me a couple rounds of hearing the song before I thought it was a Chestnut-sided. At first hearing I only new it was something unusual. I didn't believe myself until I got visual confirmation, given the rareness of finding this species. |
| Behavior: | Singing high up above trail on an elevated dead branch. I did use a recording to try and entice the bird closer. He was completely immune or just oblivious to played song. He never came in closer or cared about my presence. |
| Habitat: | Mixed oak and big-tooth maple forest. |
| Similar
species and
how were they eliminated: |
Other warblers, but nothing really similar. |
| Previous
experience with this & similar species: |
My 4th sightings of this species in Utah. |
