Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
We heard the bird singing loudly and nearby as we pulled off the road at this location. We had not heard the same song before in UT, so we really wanted to ID the bird.

At first we tried to locate the individual singing in order to get a visual, but we could not find it immediately.

Being afraid that we'd flush it, we returned to our vehicle (to use as a blind) to record the audio with cellphones and to compare the song to audio recordings in the iBird Pro app.

Unfortunately, when we played the song for a YTVI, the audio went through our vehicle's audio system quite loudly. This appeared to frighten the bird immediately, which took off and left, singing as it went.

We then listened to PLVI and YTVI songs from iBird in the vehicle at the time and the most similar sound was a richer tone, like the YTVI.

We stayed in the area for another 30 minutes, hoping the individual would return, but we were not successful in observing it again.

Later, when we got to our lodging, we also listened to recordings on All About Birds, and again, the YTVI seemed closer to what we heard.

We got one recording, which will be sent via email.
Song or call & method of delivery: Heard song repeatedly, clearly, and loudly over a period of about 2 to 3 minutes.

Behavior:
Habitat: Pinyon-juniper woodland
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
We were able to get one brief recording on the bird, which had the distinctive pattern for vireos of "question and answer."

This individual sounded more like reference recordings of a YTVI than for a PLVI.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
I have observed, photographed, and/or recorded YTVI on 26 occasions, most of which were in the state of IL. I have also observed them in FL, GA, ND, WI, and IN.

I have observed PLVI 14 times in UT, WY, NM, AZ, and CO. I also observed a state second record observation of PLVI in IL in May, 2018, accepted by the IL Ornithological Society.
