Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
The bird had streaked yellow underparts and a white eyering. It had a white wingbar on grayish wings, and dark mask. Gray on top of head. I did not see a black patch underneath the throat, or it's tail feathers.
Song or call & method of delivery: None
Behavior: Hopping back and forth between trees in a mixed flock of Townsend's and Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Habitat: Near forest edge with mixed species of trees, mainly Aspens and evergreen trees
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
I thought it was a Townsend's Warbler at first, but I went to take a picture and I saw a white eyering and the gray head. I also noticed that the yellow coloration and streaking extended to the bird's flanks and belly unlike the Townsend's Warblers.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
I had not previously encountered a Magnolia Warbler, but I'd seen Townsend's once before on Antelope Island at Garr Ranch and been looking for them at other parts of the County before here. I see Yellow-rumped Warblers nearly every other day.
References consulted: I used Merlin Bird ID for my references, I had studied the likely birds earlier that day, in which the Magnolia Warbler had come up.
