Field Marks and Identifying Characteristics: |
I watched the same area for the rest of the day and for several days later. No
return of the hummingbird. I keep a camera close by, the hummer was gone too
fast to get a photo. I have seen Rivoli s (Magnificent) Hummingbird on several occasions in Arizona and also twice in Costa Rica. I think I wrote that it was a juvenile, but it was a female. In looking at photos of both Rivoli s and Blue-throated Mountain-gem in Sibley s, they are very similar, however, the hummer we saw, had a remarkably longer bill. In looking at both females, that would be the only difference that I could offer. Unmistakably longer bill. And, I was not aware of white behind the eye, which is much more prominent in the Blue throated. We see Anna's quite often in our yard and it definitely was not an Anna's. We see Costa's and Black chinned, but they are MUCH smaller than the large hummer we saw We have not seen it since, but we are looking and if it returns, I will try for a photo, and visitors would be welcome if it hangs out. Also, we have 3 hummingbird feeders in our back yard, which abuts the Desert Tortoise Reserve. The hummer in question was on the barbed wire separating out yard from the preserve, not at any of the feeders, which had fresh liquid in them |
Song or call & method of delivery: | we were inside looking out through glass window. could not hear any call |
Behavior: | sat on wire fence and flew before I could take photo |
Habitat: | our back yard abuts the Desert Tortoise Reserve in Washington County, Utah |
Similar
species and
how were they eliminated: |
Clearly larger than Anna's and Costa's and Black Chinned which we have all the time. The only other species that resembles it is the Blue throated Mountain gem, but the bill on this bird was remarkably longer than anything I have seen. I was not aware of white behind the eye, which I think is quite pronounced in the mountain gem. |
Previous
experience with this & similar species: |
I have seen the magnificent several times in Arizona and Costa Rica |

Additional comments: | I have been an avid birder for 15+ years with a life list of almost 900. This is the first time I have ever submitted a form. I hope it is strongly considered. What a thrill it was to see. |
