Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
Looked like an empidonax flycatcher: Prominent wing bars, olive gray above & white with a touch of yellow below.  Fairly prominent, slightly teardrop-shaped eye ring -- a little broader posteriorly.  The head looked relatively large and a little squarish compared to the usual empid giving it a stocky look.
Song or call & method of delivery: A persistent sharp and loud enough for even me to hear, "chebic" call -- typical of a Least Flycatcher.
Behavior: Moving around and calling in a tree
Habitat: Riparian - near a dirt road along a river
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Other Empdonax flycatchers by the shape of the eye ring, the comparitively prominent head and overall stocky look and the unique song.
Previous experience with
this & similar species:
I've seen them four or five times in Utah.
