Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
Only got a fleeting glimpse as it flushed, I identified it primarily by call. Was relatively small with a notched tail, brown back, and white belly with streaks.
Song or call & method of delivery: Buzzy, nasal "chit-chit-chit" given from near eye level in dense cover of trees
Behavior: Calling from dense bushes then flushed as I tried to get closer
Habitat: Dry mountain forest near stream
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Calls eliminated most songbirds and notched tail indicative of finches. Brown back and white belly eliminated any goldfinch species and size and calls eliminated House or Cassin's Finch.
Previous experience with

Seen at Alta as well as in Wisconsin
