Field Marks and Identifying Characteristics: |
First noticed a small olive yellow-brown bird run on the ground into cover, then
it came out and we got a great look at the white breast with black streaks, and
the black and orange crown stripes. Also noted white eyering. This bird was
missing its tail. Also if you look at the photos of this Ovenbird and compare
them with the one reported the week before(see Norm Jensen's record), you will
notice the head striping is different, meaning this is a different individual. 1
of 3 reported at this location the same month, but all separated by over a week
between sightings. (see photos) |
Song or call & method of delivery: | None heard |
Behavior: | Running around on the ground, scratching through the leaves. |
Habitat: | Thick grove of poplar near a spring, in an otherwise open landscape on the edge of the Great Salt Lake, known migrant trap |
Similar
species and
how were they eliminated: |
Waterthrushes lack the orange crown stripe and
eyering Hermit and Swainson's Thrushes also lack the rufous and black crown stripes and are larger. |
Previous
experience with this & similar species: |
Yes, saw one 8 days previous at the same location. |
