First-winter. Black on top of head to rear of crown, white on face extending
from chin to nape, lacking distinct crescent of winter adult. Neck dark showing
some rufous towards rear. Back black with paler undersides and white mottled
flanks. Bill yellowish with darker culmen (see photo) |
