Field Marks and Identifying Characteristics: |
Dan Trujillo found a fall Prothonotary Warbler at the pond at Tonaquint Park
following storms moving through Washingotn County. We believe it was a first
fall male (?) based on plumage brightness. We observed the warbler foraging low
along the edge of the pond systematically working the shoreline, low overhanging
branches, and emergent sticks and debris. Observed through October 7th. Description: Large stocky warbler with a short tail and long stout bill. Bright yellow head with large black eye and large, stout, pale bill. Olive yellow mantle and bluish gray wings, rump, and upper tail. Undersides bright yellow from chin to belly and bright white undertail coverts. Underside of tail white with black edges and tip. White flashes in tail visible in flight. Grayish black legs and feet.
