I saw that Carl has submitted a
record for the Iceland Gull we saw on 15 Jan 2011 (Record 2011-01).
While I do believe that this was an Iceland Gull, and have counted it as
such in my own records, I think that absolutely eliminating a pale
Thayer's on the basis of the traits we observed is difficult to
impossible (and this is why I have not submitted my own record of this
bird). In particular, I disagree with Carl's statements that "The
primaries of the bird were almost purely white," and, "the wingtips had
no brown or coloration compared to Kumlien's." Rather, I found the
primaries to be a middle grayish-brown, and the photo I took at the time
(attached) supports this. The photos Carl submitted do not show the
primaries. Hopefully this photo can still be helpful in reviewing this
record; sorry for the delay. -Ryan
