Field Marks and
Identifying Characteristics:
warbler with narrow, black bill and bright, yellow underside. Broad, black streaks on sides and black chest collar. Broad, black face mask with white superciliary and gray head, gray wings and a broad, white wing bar. Belly and undertail coverts were bright white.
Song or call & method of delivery: Song was a weak, "weeta weeta weetest" that rises at the end. Call was a somewhat hoarse "whit".
Behavior: moving around tree tops, feeding/singing
Habitat: was in tall deciduous trees
Similar species and how
were they eliminated:
Only warbler with similar coloration, overall markings, and song is Yellow-rumped. Yellow-rumped has white underbody, less defined black streaking to sides, and lacks broad, black face
mask. Yellow-rump has distinct sharp "whit" call. Song is longer and more slurred, typically fading at end.

extensive experience with this and similar species. Bird Biologist for 15 years in NJ and throughout the East, conducted song bird surveys throughout that time, including banding,
breeding, and migration. Have seen/heard thousands of Magnolia Warblers and uncountable number of other warblers.
