were two of them flitting in a small tree.
Sep 2012
Ryan P. O'Donnell (10 Sep 2012) - We spent time at
Dugway Proving Grounds (Tooele Co.) where we located a Vermillion Flycatcher. We
continued on to Fish Springs NWR from there, where other highlights included a
singing LONG-EARED OWL and a WARBLING VIREO (each listed as
"accidental, seen less than every five years" on the refuge checklist); a
NASHVILLE WARBLER (listed as "rare, seen at intervals of two to five
years"); and a female GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE (not listed as occurring on
the refuge in the fall on the refuge checklist, but listed as "rare" in the
summer.) I suspect each of these species are probably more common on the refuge
than the checklist indicates, but I can't say so from personal experience as
this was my first trip there.
May 2012
Candy Zaffis (14 May 2012) - Had a good birding day
from Dugway to Fish Springs on Sunday, May 13th. Got a great photo of the
Eastern Kingbird in the picnic area. Even tho the ponds are REALLY low at Fish
Springs, the birds that were there seemed to be more concentrated, so it was
easier to see multiple species - I'm sure I missed some shorebirds because the
bugs were biting really badly, and we couldn't stay out with the Scope for too
long without getting swarmed or bit!!

Joel and Cathy Beyer (23 May 2011) - On the way
home Sunday, we stopped at Chicken Creek Reservoir (Juab Co.) and spotted 2
breeding-plumaged Horned
Grebes.
Feb 2011
Bob Walters (17 Feb 2011) - [Delta, UT] - It was
reported to me (February 16, 2011) that about 15k Snow and Ross's
Geese are present at Gunnison Bend Reservoir, just outside Delta, Utah.
We're hoping to double that number by the time of the 2011 Utah Snow Goose
Festival (February 25-27).
May 2010
Lu Giddings (26 May 2010) - spent the day
birding from the
Little Sahara Sand Dunes cut-off on the Nephi-to-Leamington road, north
of the sand dunes and out into the Sevier desert, along the west side of the
Sheeprock mountains, and then through
Lookout Pass to Vernon and home. Saw my first Burrowing Owl of the
year, and my first Warbling Vireos at a spring ten miles west of Cherry
Creek.
Lu Giddings (8 May 2010) - Utah County Birders had
a very good day traveling to Fish Springs, Callao, and Delta... The best bird of
the day was a Green Heron spotted hunting in the reeds along the south
edge of Avocet Pond. We were also surprised to find a Calliope Hummingbird
in the trees near the Visitor's Center...

Tim Avery (18 Sep 2009) - Just talked to Colby Neuman. He,
Carl Ingwell, and Jeff Bilsky found a first year male Baltimore Oriole in
the housing area at Fish Spring NWR today...They said the bird was very
difficult to see and they spent several hours trying to get a good view of the
bird.
May 2009
Dennis Shirley (18 May 2009) - Just got in from the 11th Annual
Utah County Hotspots Field Trip, for the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival... Best
birds included the target species: Bobolink, P/J species - Juniper Titmouse,
Black-throated Gray and Virginia's Warbler, Dusky and Willow Flycatcher, Eastern
Kingbird, Yellow-breasted Chat, and six warblers, including the find of the day
-- Northern Parula. The Parula was seen at Burraston Ponds Wildlife
Management Area near Mona.
Jay Banta (23 May 2009) - have found a male Summer Tanager in
the Refuge housing area. He is reasonably tame and I was able to watch him by
being just a little stealthy from a distance of less than 10 yards for over a
minute.
Colby Neuman (31 May 2009) - A male MAGNOLIA WARBLER (photos obtained) was at
the housing area at Fish Springs NWR (Juab County) this morning...and it even
sang softly a few
times. Awesome! A male INDIGO BUNTING (singing also), a WHITE-WINGED DOVE
(present yesterday, too), three MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS (very odd given the time of
year) and two GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES were additional highlights this morning.
My dad and I were in a rush to get home this morning,
but we stopped in Callao (well just in front of the couple properties on the far
west end of town - with the largest trees) and listened briefly... I'll be
honest in that the bird singing had a song that sounded very similar to a CANADA
WARBLER. Wow, I wish we had spent more time finding this bird or that I had just
put my camera on video mode to see if I could have recorded the song...I guess I
just thought we'd be able to pish it out or it would sing more or pop out into
view...OOPS!
Apr 2009
Eric Huish (9 Apr 2009) - Matt Mills just called me (10:40 Apr 9). He just saw a
group of three cormorants flying from Chicken Creek Reservoir last seen circling
across freeway towards the town of Mills. One of the cormorants was "half
the size of the others with a longer tail".
Matt Mills just called again (11:30). The Neotropic
Cormorant came back to Chicken Creek Reservoir. It came back by itself,
circled a few times and landed at the far south end, close to the road. It was
at the South end of the Reservoir (but not out where he could see it) when Matt
left.
Lu Giddings (10 Apr 2009) - Four Horned Grebe were seen at Mona Reservoir
(Juab county) early this afternoon between the boat ramp and the dam on the west
side of the lake. While all four were in the same general area, each was doing
its own thing. Three were in breeding plumage and the fourth was in mid-molt
between winter and breeding plumage. Three were feeding just a few feet from
shore while the fourth was about 100 feet out. (photos)
Jan 2009
Dave Hanscom (17 Jan 2009) - Rusty Blackbird still at Fish Springs...
The blackbird was in his usual location again today. Thanks to Pat Jividen for
directions. Although a noisy group of birders had scared him off just before we
arrived, he returned soon after they left. We parked a ways down the road to
give him some space, and he was soon back feeding along the edge of the canal.
...
Pat Jividen (14 Jan 2009) - Rusty Blackbird... I went out to fish
springs again today with Steve Carr. We saw the bird again within 15 feet of
where we saw it Monday. If you go out to see it check in with either Jay or
Robert and they'll show you on a map the place to bird.
Colby Neuman (14 Jan 2009) - My dad and I made a quick trip to Fish Springs
NWR today...highlights are below... American Bittern 1 - flushed by north
spring ...Great Egret 2 - 1 feeding in avocet and 1 in egret ...Rusty
Blackbird 1 - seen in housing area and later along the collection ditch...
Terry and Pam Sadler (8 Jan 2009) - On The Fish Springs CBC we sighted a bird
in the springs area of the refuge that stumped us. The bird was in the foggy
mist and most difficult to identify. We thought the bird might possibly be a
female Rusty Blackbird but our view was so poor we couldn't rule out
female Cowbird, or a variant male Brewer's Blackbird. We couldn't tell for sure
if it had a yellow eye. The bird flew before we were able to get better looks at
it or photograph it. Refuge Manager, Jay Banta, relocated the bird yesterday
afternoon and this morning was able to get a better look at the bird. He
believes it may be a female Rusty Blackbird with a yellow eye and some rusty
wash in the body with a light eyebrow and throat. The bird his staying fairly
close to the area where it was first sighted.
Oct 2008
Matt Mills (18 Oct 2008) - Went out to Fish Springs today with Matt
Westover. We were there for work but had a bit of time to poke around Thomas
Ranch and area. Didn't drive around to see the ponds. Highlights were an adult
Northern Shrike, a Golden-crowned Kinglet, and a single male Evening
Grosbeak.
Jul 2008
Jay Banta reported a Pacific Golden-Plover at Fish Springs, seen on
19 Jul 2008. photos -http://www.utahbirds.org/hotlinephotos/2008/PacificGoldenPlover.htm

Dennis Shirley (29 Jun 2008) - Thought I'd provide a recap of the ABA field
trips I conducted this past week.... Highlights included: Burraston Ponds WMA
- Blue Grosbeak, Common Grackle...
May 2008
Matt Mills (1 June 2008) - I spent most of the past week out at Fish
Springs and, while much of the time was spent working, I did manage to get
some birding in everyday. ... On Tuesday, 5/27, I had a first summer male
American Redstart in the housing area. This is presumably the same bird
photographed on Monday by Kris Van Fleet On Wednesday , 5/28, there were 2
Common Grackles... On Friday 5/30, we stopped in at the Callao Civilian
Corps Campground again. The adult male Indigo Bunting was still present
and singing. It was singing a very yellow warblerish song. Also present here
was... a female Scott's Oriole...
Colby Neuman (26 May 2008) - Jeff Bilsky and I headed out to some of the
migrant traps of the west desert from Saturday through Monday. ...Highlights
from the weekend included - 5/24/08 - Fish Springs NWR - remember permission
is required to bird the housing area... 1 White-winged Dove - housing
area - at least the 5th record for the refuge... Callao - lack of migrants -
1 Whimbrel - in field that was being actively irrigated... 5/25/08 -
Callao - 1 Whimbrel - continuing... 5/26/08 - ...Callao... 1
Black-and-white Warbler - singing male - it did it's normal song that went
into a Yellow Warbler sounding song and then back into it's normal song...but
it eventually reverted to their typical song....
Matt Mills (22 May 2008) - Yesterday Matt Westover and I had a pair of
Indigo Buntings at the Civilian Corps Campground just south of the town of
Callao, Utah...
Apr 2008
Tim Avery (25 Apr 2008) - Just stopped at chicken creek reservoir in Juab
County and found a number of good birds: 1 Short-billed Dowitcher...3
Greater Scaup...
Tim Avery (7 Apr 2008) - ...Friday 04/04 - Chicken Creek Reservoir - 1 -
Horned Grebe...
Feb 2008
Lu Giddings (9 Feb 2008) - Dennis Shirley and went in search of longspurs
and other winter birds this morning. We passed through Santaquin to Mona,
drove the west side of Mona reservoir and through Goshen canyon into Goshen
and Genola and then back into Payson and Salem pond. We did not see any
longspurs but did have a few noteworthy observations: - a pair of Trumpeter
Swans were seen on Burraston ponds - three drake cinnamon teal were seen
at the inlet end of Mona reservoir...
Nov 2007
Tim Avery (27 Nov 2007) - I ventured on to Yuba Lake State Park, also in
Juab county, which had a number of birds around the shore and on the lake. The
first bird I noticed was a single swan out on the water. I set my scope up,
and the bird appeared to bean un-collared adult Trumpeter Swan.
Sep 2007
Larry Tripp (23 Sep 2007) - ...The only other birds of note this weekend
were... a Broad-winged Hawk just south of Nephi on Friday.
Jay Banta (11 Sep 2007) - Immature Sabine's Gull has been seen on
Sunday, Monday, and Tues just off the north dike of Pintail Unit on Fish
Springs NWR. Photo will be posted soon. It is one of on two individual gulls
that are currently using that area.
Aug 2007
The Reddish Egret was still present at Fish Springs just to the
south of the rookery in Avocet Unit. The bird was not seen until nearly 6:00pm
tonight and was about 300~ yards out from the dike.... The Painted Bunting
was seen at 4:15pm and again at 5:20pm feeding low in the trees along the
ditch on the west side of the picnic area.... 2 Solitary Sandpiper were
seen around the refuge, amongst around 23 Spotted Sandpiper.
Buck Russell (4 Aug 2007) - Bob Bradley and I made a trip to Fish Springs
NWR this morning and were fortunate to see the Painted Bunting (in the
picnic area-showed up around noon), a female Scarlet Tanager (in the
top of the canopy in the trees between the Headquarters building and
residential area-got permission to walk through the residential area), the
Reddish Egret (in the Avocet pond/unit, visible from the road between the
Mallard Pond/unit and Avocet Pond/unit)...
David Allan (4 Aug 2007) - On Friday, 8/3, my wife Darcie and I finally got
to enjoy the Painted Bunting (lifer for us both) seen by many at Fish
Springs NWR. We arrived at the picnic area at 1230h and saw the bird almost
immediately. We also got great looks at the Reddish Egret (lifer for
Darcie). We observed it near the north end of Curlew, at ~1415h. Very soon
after finding the bird, we were treated to a display of its foraging dance
routine.
Pat Jividen (2 Aug 2007) - Reddish Egret, Painted Bunting...
We saw both at fish springs today. The egret was at the rookery island at
mallard and the bunting there at the picnic tables.
Matt Mills (1 Aug 2007) - Saw the Painted Bunting again last night
(Aug 1st) in the picnic area at Fish Springs. The bird looked rather ruffled,
not sure if it was the weather recently, being out of place, or just the
attention it has been receiving but it sure looked a lot rougher than when we
first spotted it.
Jul 2007
Steve Carr (31 Jul 2007) - The UOS Quick Chase to Fish Springs, attended by 8
birders, also saw the Painted Bunting at the picnic site within minutes
upon arrival at about 10:15 a.m. today. A lifer for most and a state bird for
all but Larene, who had seen it last week. ...A couple of fleeting glimpses of
the possible/probable female Scarlet Tanager were seen, not at the picnic
site but at the Hqs area. Unlike the Bunting, which made itself very obvious
time and again, the "Tanager" kept to herself in the higher canopy of the
cottonwoods, often flying from one set of trees to another.
Edson Leite (29 Jul 2007) - My girlfriend Beth and I went after the
Painted Bunting this morning. What a great looking bird. We got to the
refuge at 5pm. Spotted the bird by the cottonwoods near the picnic tables.
Also a lot of Common Nighthawks, the Red-shouldered Hawk made an
appearance near the picnic area and the Nighthawks were not too pleased. ...On
our way out Beth spotted a American Bittern on the first pond from the entrance.
Finally got that nemesis bird. But my camera battery had died.
Milt Moody (25 Jul 2007) - Matt Mills reported that the Painted Bunting
is at the same location today and that he's gotten some pictures of the bird...
He also saw a female Scarlet Tanager, and the same Red-shouldered Hawk
as he saw yesterday (that's quite the trio all in the same place).
Milt Moody (24 Jul 2007) - Matt Mills phoned in to reported a male Painted
Bunting at the Thomas Ranch Interpretive Site just up the road north of the
main buildings at Fish Springs. It was on the ground around the picnic tables.
He also reported seeing a Red-shouldered Hawk in the area.
May 2007
Lu Giddings (25 May 2007) - A very handsome male Rose-breasted Grosbeak
was seen along Cherry Creek at about 10 a.m. this morning. It was flushed up
out of the tops of the willows when a yellow warbler lit very near to it, long
enough for me to get a very good look at it but not long enough for me to grab
my camera. I spent over an hour waiting for the bird to reappear but to no
avail. Cherry Creek is about 10 miles west of the north entrance to the Little
Sahara Sand Dunes and provides some lovely dense, willow riparian vegetation
in the middle of the pinion-juniper desert.
Apr 2007
Tim Avery - Friday 04/27 - Chicken Creek Reservoir ...4 - Semipalmated
Sandpiper...
Jay Banta (17 Apr 2007) - [Fish Springs NWR] White-winged Dove has

vicinity for two day. Birders are reminded that they must get advance permission
to bird in the Refuge housing area.
Lu Giddings (15 Apr 2007) - We had a great day of birding in the Great Basin
yesterday. Five vehicles and 16 birders left the Payson Walmart at 6:00 a.m. and
made the trek to Fish Springs...- two Greater White-fronted Geese and at
least two Greater Scaup, the former at the northeast end of Harrison
pool, the latter in the pool to the south of Harrison (thanks to Jack Skolicky
for alerting the Sommerfelds to the geese!)
Nov 2006
Lu Giddings (19 Nov 2006) - It was a beautiful afternoon and a lovely,
irresistible opportunity to spend a few hours outside. I started in Santaquin,
worked my way to Mona, and then along the west side of the reservoir to the
dam. Highlights include: - a Merlin in some trees along the east side of Mona
reservoir - a female Western Tanager, again in some trees along east side of
the reservoir - a Horned Grebe and two common loons on Mona reservoir,
along with about a dozen straggling western grebes scattered across the lake's
surface.
Lu Giddings (2 Nov 2006) - Earlier this morning Dennis Shirley and I spent
some time checking Mona reservoir. We saw 30+ species, most notable of which
were near the dam and which include: a Horned Grebe in standard
plumage - a Hooded Merganser hen - a flock of about 40 red-breasted
mergansers, all hens - two common loons - a drake canvasback, possibly in the
company of 5 females (seen from a considerable distance in bad light)
Oct 2006
Dennis Shirley (16 Oct 2006) - The Shirley boys {Darren,Bryan,Devin, and
Dennis} were at Fish Springs over the weekend and ran into Jack Skalicky, who
was doing his monthly bird survey for Jay Banta, the refuge manager. He found
some good birds for the area. The best included; Eastern Phoebe,
Summer Tanager, Common Grackle, Great Egrets. The EP ST and
CG were around the headquarters. No unusual shorebirds or waterfowl were
found. The phoebe was a striking dark and white adult. The tanager was a
red/orange/yellow juvenile, and could have easily been an eastern variety.
Sep 2006
Rick Fridell - ...Other highlights included: Fish Springs NWR, Juab Co.,
9/7 Semipalmated Sandpiper (Ibis Unit), Common Tern (Avocet
Unit), Eastern Kingbird (picnic area), American Redstart (first year

(adult), Indigo Bunting (female)
May 2006
Colby Neuman (23 May 2006) - ...we then drove back north to Fish Springs
NWR where migrants were relatively scarce (quite windy). However, highlights
were a male Bobolink and a Stilt Sandpiper foraging with a flock
of Long-billed Dowitchers. ...This morning we conducted a breeding bird survey
for Jay Banta at Fish Springs and the nearby desert. Highlights included a
Sanderling mixed in with a flock of Snowy Plovers, and a male Indigo Bunting
and a Northern Waterthrush at the picnic area. Also, there was a
substantial overall increase in the number of migrants present at the housing
and picnic areas today.
Joel Beyer (4 May 2006) - Kathy and I made a quick trip to the St. George
area earlier this week, with the highlights as follows: Juab Co. Mona

parallel to the railroad tracks I heard one Grasshopper Sparrow...
Merrill Webb (14 Apr 2006) - I had a chance to do some birding...in Juab
County yesterday afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. ...five species of shorebirds
and 12 species of waterfowl including a female Long-tailed Duck at
Chicken Creek Reservoir...
Tim Avery (10 Apr 2006) - ... As we headed back through Mona we saw a
Eurasian Collared- Dove along Main Street. Our next stop was Chicken Creek
Reservoir which was covered with waterfowl and a number of grebes. By far the
best bird was a Short-billed Dowitcher molting into breeding from basic
plumage, along with what was a molting Long-billed Dowitcher.
Feb 2006
Lu Giddings (4 Feb 2006) - It was a cold and windy but dry day at Fish
Springs today...The surprise birds of the day were four Great Egrets
and five White-faced Ibis in the northwest corner of Mallard pool, all
feeding together. Tim Avery reported seeing four great egrets and 6 or 7
white-faced ibis on his trip to Fish Springs on Jan 8th; perhaps these are the
same birds...
Jan 2006
Tim Avery (8 Jan 2006) - ...I came across 2 adult Trumpeter Swan, on
the north end of Mallard Unit at Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge.
Despite weather reports it was sunny and clear most of the day. Other birds of

Nov 2005
Bryan Shirley (21 Nov 2005) - Hi All. After birding in the sauna of Bangkok
for the last month Fish Springs was a bit cool this weekend, but it did
produce a few good birds. The best was 1 Bohemian Waxwing in the trees
around the headquarters. We also saw our first Bald Eagles of the winter, 1
Rough-legged Hawk, 5 Tundra Swans, and 1 snow goose.
Oct 2005

notable birds observed on this GSL Audubon Hotspots excursion include 3 Great
Egrets at the Refuge and 12 Short-eared Owls seen along the 5 Mile Pass-
Faust cut-off road during the early morning drive to the Refuge.
Sep 2005
Colby Neuman - My dad received a phone call from Jay Banta this afternoon
(Thursday 9/29/05) concerning an Inca Dove or Ground-Dove sp. being present at
Fish Springs NWR...that is all the information I have at this time. (30 Sep
2005) - I just talked with Jay Banta, and he said they thought the bird was
most likely a Ruddy Ground-Dove. He said the bird was seen yesterday
coming to a puddle in the housing area. They have yet to see the bird today,
but he said they have spent little time looking for it. Note: this area is
closed to the public and one needs permission to bird this area.
Colby Neuman (18 Sep 2005) - Tim Avery and I went birding around the west
desert this past weekend. ...We stopped in Callao (Juab Co.) and saw quite a
few migrants from the road...some of which included ...one Cassin's Vireo.
...headed to Fish Springs NWR...where we did find one juvenile Stilt
Sandpiper and two (possibly three) Short-billed Dowitchers mixed in
a flock of 12 basic plumaged Long-billed Dowitchers. The two Short-billed
Dowitchers appeared to be juvenile birds that had nearly molted into basic
plumage.
Rick Fridell (5 Sep 2005) - Kristen and I took advantage of the Labor Day
holiday...and made a run through the West Desert...The highlight was a
Hudsonian Godwit at Fish Springs. The Godwit was foraging along the west
side of the large shallow pool in the Pintail Unit of the refuge. There were
1000's of birds in this pool and conditions are currently perfect for
shorebirds, waders, pelicans, ducks, etc. There were dozens of herons and
egrets (50+ GB Herons, 80+ Snowy Egrets, 1 Great Egret) and we saw 18
species of shorebirds (including 50+ Snowy Plovers and a couple Sanderlings)
and at least half of the shorebirds were on the far side of the pool and
unidentifiable even with a scope. We also saw a female Blue Grosbeak near the
refuge headquarters.
Sep 2004
Jack Binch (18 Spet 2004) - I took another trip to Fish Springs to look for
warblers, and was not disappointed. There was a Chestnut-sided Warbler in
the trees just before you enter the private homes. It was very co-operative and
let me and a group of SLCounty Birders get some very good looks and some photos.
Aug 2004
KC Childs (28 Aug 2004) - This morning a group of about 16 birders left from
Provo to start our day at Burrstin Ponds near the town of Mona in Juab County.

male Tennessee Warbler in the town of Callao. It was at the west end of
town, I heard it singing from my truck as I entered the town. When I located the
bird it was singing from a small mostly dead tree behind a deserted house on the
north side of the road. I last saw it fly into some tall Elms at the next house
to the E.

(Juab Co.) today...Here were some of the more notable sightings from the day:
Blue-winged Teal - 1 male in Avocet Unit ...Pacific Loon - 1 - It
was in the far east end of Avocet Unit. The loon appeared to be molting into
first summer plumage. I obtained a few decent photographs of the unusual plumage
the bird was displaying! ...Great Egret - 1 in Avocet Unit ...Least
Tern - 1 adult mixed in with a flock of approximately 30 Forster's Terns in
Mallard Unit. I was also able to obtain poor, but sufficient photographs of this

Jack.Torrey and Glenda Cotter - (Mon, 3 Mar 2003)
For two years in a row we've found Pinyon Jays in the exact
same location while driving down to the Snow Goose Festival in
Delta. Going west from Nephi on Highway 132, after you drive
across the valley and enter the first mountain pass, the north side
of the road changes from dead trees to live pinyon. About halfway
up on the right under the power poles there was a small (~12) flock of jays.
