Both males and females clearly visible. Feeders located in high mountain region with surrounding forests. Males clearly displayed red caps and paler pink chests. Females had pale faces and darkly streaked chests and on under tail coverts. Males and females were feeding together and dominated the feeders.

Mar 2014

Eric Huish (20 Mar 2014) - Pat Jividen just called me to report a CALIFORNIA CONDOR in Dagget County. (He couldn't send an email from where he is.) Pat was with his wife and some friends driving along the highway about 3 miles north of Dutch John in Dagget County when an adult California Condor crossed in front of them. It flew behind a hill. Pat turned the car around and was able to get a second look. They saw the red head and big white marks in the wings. It was a tagged bird. Pat says they tried to read the wing tag but never could quite get a clear look. The tag was a 3 digit number and he thought one of the numbers may have been a '4' but isn't sure.

Mar 2012

Casey Day (11 Mar 2011) - Matt Westover, Suzanne Dunken and I spent a few days on the Green River up near Flaming Gorge the first week of March and I thought I would give an account of some of the bird highlights seen.
--On the river, CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS and AMERICAN DIPPERS were plentiful. Ducks were also plentiful, as we saw several flocks of COMMON GOLDENEYE, several pairs of COMMON MERGANSERS, and one pair of flyover RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS. Several BALD EAGLES were still around, as well as a pair of GOLDEN EAGLES seen soaring above C Section of the Green...Near the end of C Section we spotted one GREAT HORNED OWL tucked away in the canyon wall.
--Away from the river around Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area we saw two different flocks of PINYON JAYS, of ~30 birds each, a few MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS, and a small flock of what appeared to be ~15 ROSY-FINCHES foraging near Red Fleet Reservoir...The birds were too far away to be sure, but the closest one appeared to be a black rosy-finch.
--Also, at Red Canyon Lodge they have a feeder that was servicing a large mixed flock of PINE SISKINS and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, with one STELLER'S JAY. There was also a downy or hairy woodpecker off in the distance. Best bird at this location was a small flock of RED CROSSBILLS that were passing through just as we arrived, and got great looks at one that perched at the top of a tree.
--I thought we might spot some early swallows or osprey during the trip but they were all absent.

Aug 2011

Oliver Hansen [1 Aug 2011] - Went up to Daggett Co. this week to continue some botanical research that I started last summer...During my 9-10 hour hike the closest thing to a human I saw was a very curious fox at Daggett Lake He stared me down for about 2 minutes. I was greeted at the summit by a flock of American pipits. Pretty cool to see them hanging out above 12,000 feet. Plenty of the normal Uinta Mountain birds back at camp at Spirit Lake: Clark's nutcrackers, chickadees, woodpeckers, etc. Great day...

Aug 2009

Jeff Bilsky (8 Aug 2009) - Earlier in the morning near MM4 on the Flaming Gorge highway, I had a couple of PYGMY NUTHATCHES mixed in with a big group of other travelling montane species moving through the Ponderosas'. Later on, I drove on the Sheep Creek Loop and stopped at Palisades Memorial Park and located a single TOWNSEND'S WARBLER that was cooperative enough to give me great looks - seems a bit early maybe?

Mar 2007

Merrill Webb (19 Mar 2007) - I spent last Friday in Daggett County and found a few interesting birds. Probably the most interesting was the five Gray-crowned Rosy Finches at the Lucerne Valley Marina on the shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
They were coming in to a feeder located next to a residence that was located just to the north of the boat launch at the end of the road.  Also had a Hooded Merganser in an area just south of the Utah border in an ice free area of Flaming Gorge.  Saw five Eurasian Collared Doves in Manila and one in Dutch John.

Dec 2004

Scott & Cynthia Porter (5 Dec 2004) - Just got back with my family from Historic Jarvie Ranch in Daggett County along the Green River celebrating an old time x-mas. While we were there, I saw a flock of about 70 Bohemian Waxwings. Their chatter was very distinctive.

Aug 2004

(7 Aug 2004) - A bunch of White-tailed Ptarmigans (around 10) were found on the north slope of Leidy Peak on the border of Daggett and Uintah Counties by birders on the UOS field trip.

Jan 2004

Tim Gorman (31 Jan 2004) - 4 flocks of "snowbirds" were seen in and around Manila. Around Sheep Creek one flock of about 20 dark birds was surely Black Rosy Finches. Horned Larks with Snow Buntings mixed in made up the other flocks.

May 2002

Russ Norvell - After-second-year male KENTUCKY WARBLER, banded and photographed, 5/25/02, Sheep Creek Geological Loop (about 8 mi south of Manila, UT on route 44).  Bird was captured ~100 yds upstream from Cascade Campground.   A Townsend's Warbler was also seen in the Pondersa stand near Colton Creek Guard Station, toward the top of the geologic loop road, in the company of several Pygmy Nuthatches
