Seen right at the beginning of the loop; it had an orange face with a grey cheek spot, a grey central crown stripe, and a grey nape. The wings were an unmarked reddish brown and it had a striped back and flanks. The belly was white and the chest lacked any chest spots. The orange face was a key field mark to eliminate more common species, and the plain wings, grey nape, and grey head stripe were key field marks that eliminated LeConte's Sparrow.

Glenn Kincaid (6 Sep 2019) – [Moab, UT] - GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. As driving along road BLM 179 near (39.032601, -109.214183) a sparrow lifted up in front of me and landed on the top strand of a barbed wire fence, about 30 feet away. I stopped and viewed the bird through 10x binoculars. I had a profile view for about 10 seconds before it flew off. What I saw plumage-wise was very low contrast - light brown and dingy white. The thing I noticed most was that I could not see a single major plumage feature to latch onto, the bird was completely nondescript. No supercilium, malar, wing bar, nothing. The things I did note were: shape-wise, the bird basically had no forehead - the top of the head blended smoothly onto the top of a proportionally large and light colored bill. The legs and feet were pink, with the rear toe wrapping well forward of the wire the bird was sitting on. I looked for awhile but could not locate the bird again. After returning home I reviewed field guides and online photos. I base ID primarily on Head/bill size and shape, bill color, and leg color.

When passing back by, it flew by me, about 200 feet out. It had a unique flight pattern. It then flew back towards me and banked to my right about 50’ in front of me, revealing rosy belly and lighter neck area and woodpecker look. It flew to the south and landed vertically on a fence post. Barn Swallows harassed it. Very clear views with naked eye and via binoculars.

Kayla Echols (30 Sep 2019) – [Costco, Orem, UT] - COMMON POORWILL. I accidentally scared the bird up from where it had apparently been resting on the ground between some bushes in the parking lot. I didn't get any photos, but I got a good enough look at it flying to see that the corners of its tail were white, and it lacked the white wing crescents of a Common Nighthawk. Its flight was also not the bat-like erratic darting of a nighthawk, but rather more relaxed and slightly "floppy." Biggest surprise I've had in a long time!

Observed in a dense patch of small cottonwood trees with a red-naped sapsucker and near a ladder-backed woodpecker. This northern subspecies fits based on extent of red on head and breast, as well as the back pattern/color (narrow rows of buffy spots). I don't see any signs of hybridization with red-naped or yellow-bellied.

Medium length decurved bills, white supercilia, gray crowns and generally gray bodies although the bird not depicted in the photos was more heavily patterned and appeared to be a juvenile. Leggy look due to long length of legs from body to tibio-tarsal joints.The two depicted stuck together while the third kept to itself. East pond.

Straight black bill at least as long as head from bill to nape. Facial pattern including narrow brown crown; pale suercilium, cheek and throat. Buffy brownish wash over upper breast. Feathers edged in pale, giving scalloped appearance. Wing tips longer than tail.
