Gary Newbold (4 Aug 2019) – [Bryce Canyon NP—Bristlecone Loop Trail] - HERMIT WARBLER. Observed a warbler approximately 40-50’ up in a Ponderosa Pine just off the parking lot sidewalk. First thing I noticed was two white wing bars with dark wings and a white/cream below. As bird was flitting and gleaning through the pine I was finally able to see the head. The face was completely yellow with no black or green. It was not a overly vibrant yellow and no black was visible on the throat. I confirmed with my wife that there was no lines on the face and crown. I hold a USFWS Section 10 permit (TE66177C-0) seven bird species including the golden-cheeked warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia) and have documented approximately 125-150 golden-cheeks and numerous black-throated green warblers (Setophaga virens) in Texas. Additionally I have plenty of experience with Townsend’s warblers (Setophaga townsendi) in West Texas during migration. Observed bird for approximately 5-8 minutes to confirm all field marks I could. This bird looked very similar to the first fall male Hermit warbler in Peterson Warbler guide.

Mike Hearell (9 Aug 2019) – [North Fork County Park] – FLAMMULATED OWL. 2nd juvenile (photo) fledged ~5am earlier in the day. It spent the day in nearly the same spot as the first fledgling two days earlier. At dusk the second fledgling made its way to where the first fledgling has been for the the last two nights, nearly 40’ away from the nest cavity. Unlike previous nights when the adults would bring the juveniles food, this time they would get close and then call for them to come get the food. — The fledglings roost in low cover a foot or two off the ground during the day, but quickly climb up trees to around 7-9’ off the ground once the sun goes down.
