Bill entirely black, including no loral spot. Smooth sloping curve of bill-base feathering left solid, full connection of black between eye and bill. Tundra would be much less likely in July.

Justin Taylor (9 July 2019) – [NW of Leamington, UT] - While driving on a two track road thru the middle of nowhere, I saw a bird thru the grass stand up tall. … Immediately suspected a burrowing owl which was a lifer for me. I stopped my car to make sure I could get a positive ID. As I stepped out of my car the bird hunkered down low again as if hiding. … When I was about 10m away the bird flushed and flew 15M farther away at about 5ft off the ground. The bird had a flat owl face and blunt wing tips. The color was brown all over with a lighter brown texture. The bird made several distinct calls as it flew away and continued calling on the ground. I approached the area from where it flushed and found several coyote/badger sized holes that I'm assuming the bird was using. … I looked up a bunch of sound bites on the Maculay Library and realized how much variation there was in the call. Eventually found a sound bite that was exactly the same.

Harrison Jones (28 July 2019) – [Mill Creek Canyon—Bowman Fork Trail] – NORTHERN GOSHAWK. Seen from above in flight over subalpine meadows near open pine forest at ~9800 feet. A LARGE Accipiter raptor (initially mistaken for an eagle) with Buteo-like proportions, seen well for 4 or 5 seconds. In addition to large body size, the primary 'fingers' were visible in flight, and the wings were not as rounded as other Accipiter species. The bird was flying quickly and in a straight line relatively close to the ground (perhaps at prey?), no soaring behavior. Appeared to be a juvenile bird, with stronger white eyebrow and lighter face than juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Gray and black barred tail and streaked underparts visible.
