Crown nearly a perfect half-circle shape with the pattern of a blackish comma over the dark eye and the point running down the neck. Tan cheek, dusky bodies. Divers with the appearance of pointed retrices as the tails submerged. Today it took 4.3 kayak miles, 1.0 vehicle mile and 1.2 walking miles to find the three amigos in the extreme northeast corner of the reservoir, accessed by walking the perimeter road from the southeast parking lot.

Got out of the car and immediately heard a distinct longspur rattle from overheard that I recognized as a non-Lapland rattle. I looked up and saw a gray, long-winged bird with a distinctly white tail with a narrow dark terminal band just as it called again. After this very brief look I lost it in the sun as I pivoted and tried to follow it. I heard it once more but it seemed to have flown higher and was right in the middle of the sun glare. The rattle was distinctive softer, slightly shorter in length and slightly more musical than LALO. Not at all likt the odd flight call of CCLO or the extremely dry rattle of SMLO. Tail pattern seen briefly but diagnostic.

Cameron Cox (01 Oct 2018) – [Bountiful Pond] – RUFF. Wing length and total length similar appeared similar to the LEYE but noticeably more heavily built than the yellowlegs so it appeared larger. Most sandpipers have parallel-sided inner wings, the leading edge of the and the trailing edge are almost perfectly parallel and there is no expansion where the wings meet the body. On this bird the wings obviously expanded so the base of the wings was clearly broader than the majority of the inner wing. The inner wing also tapered slightly along its length to the wrist joint. The outer wing was swept back but not as strongly as most sandpipers and while the outer wing also tapered but not as much as many sandpipers while the wing tip was a bit blunter than other sandpipers. This wing shape is really unique and a big part of the identification. The bright white secondary coverts is something I've noticed a number of times on Ruffs and the combination of clean, bright white underwings and projecting feet is unique. The overall tan and white appearance is typical of late fall juvs, the color of the chest and the extend of the coloration and how it faded into white on the lower half of the body is typical of late fall juv Ruffs.

George Webb (10 Oct 2018) – [Tropic, UT] – Cassin’s Vireo. A vireo, about 5 inches long with wing bars and a noticeable eye ring. Grayish head and back, smudgy breast with just a touch of yellow on the flanks. Did not have a blue head. Slightly smaller than Plumbeous with less noticeable spectacle. Good looks for about 30-45 seconds in good light at a distance of about 50-75 feet as it foraged in pinion-juniper habitat.

Kyle Finn (04 Oct 2018) – [Kanarra Creek Canyon] – Cordilleran Flycatcher. Yellowish flycatcher both back and belly. Bold elliptical eye ring, thicker on the ends and thinner above and below eyes. Perched in pine tree on edge of stream. Called, high ascending whistle, then falling, similar to recording on Merlin but a bit higher pitched. Not a double note like for Dusky Flycatcher. And more prolonged than Hammond's Flycatcher.

Louize, Conrad and I drove down to view the booby that had been reported on floating restroom for last month or so. Bird was there as reported allowing us great views through our spotting scope and some ok pictures. Bird flushed, flying around and giving awesome flight views while a maintenance boat came to clean restroom. After a minute or so bird landed back on restroom deck allowing maintenance person to get within inches of it as he went about his job. We watched and photographed bird for about an hour. I will post some pictures when I get time to go through them.

Turkey Vultures are migrating south now. Groups of them often roost in town where there are large trees to provide them shelter. The carrion attracted them to one local and gave them a feast before they continued their journey.

Very plain greenish-brown above, no wing bars or other markings of any kind; narrow white eye ring; yellowish undertail coverts and slightly less yellowish throat. One reference says fall migration in the west goes September to mid-October, stragglers to late October. I can't find any other bird that fits the size, the physical description and the behavior. It looks and acts very much like a female Common Yellowthroat.

Michael Schijf (6 Oct 2018) – [Confluence Park] – HOODED WARBLER - Found about 100 yards past stepover and gate along Confluence Trail (near the main park trailhead at the end of 900 North).  Distinctive male. Description copied from my submission to the Utah Birds Records Committee:  An extensively yellow warbler (dark greenish-yellow above and bright yellow below). No wing bars. A black hood begins at the top of its crown and connects to a black throat below, enclosing a bright yellow face, including forehead. Dusky lores, and a thin, dark bill. When observed from below, it showed extensive white under-tail, which contrasted from its otherwise entirely bright yellow underside. The white tail feathers were also obvious when it fanned these feathers out on at least two occasions. Decent ID photos, but better photos were taken the following day (11/7).
