Tail dark with pale yellow patches on the outer rectrices that did not extend to the end of the tail. Dark center of tail and end of tail formed a "T" when spread. Light ventrally with pale yellow wash on sides of breast. A single pale wing bar.

Frank Howe (15 Jul 2018) - [Tony Grove Lake] - American Three-toed Woodpecker. Male in partially dead doug fir (tree shows much scaling) foraging for about 20 minutes. He flew to nearby tree and drummed; another bird drummed in response immediately, followed by the third bird a minute later. Observed male had barred flanks and lacked white wing patch of sapsuckers. Yellow forehead visible briefly.

      -- [Range Valley Mountain Rd] - Ruffed Grouse. Observed immediately after I had flushed the Dusky Grouse. Smaller, crested head, thinly striped gray tail with a dark tip. Unable to photograph as the bird was extremely elusive, dense stunted Aspen grove. Less than a half mile later I was able to photograph a different bird that had some fledglings. This must be about as far south as they range.

Neil Paprocki (5 Jul 2018) - [Range Valley Mountain Rd] - Flammulated Owl. Stopped to listen for owls and noticed a tiny bird on a fir branch moving its head around. Put my flashlight on it, great views of a FLOW. A minute or so later the bird came even closer (~10m) without any calling or otherwise from myself. Heard a single quiet hoot but otherwise totally silent. Mixed-con habitat but majority conifer.

Cameron Cox (29 Jul 2018) - [Antelope Island SP -- Garr Ranch] - Purple Martin. Female PUMA. Flew right overhead as I was about to get in my car. Large broad winged swallow. I ID it naked eye then got my binoculars and got excellent looks at it few several seconds with my mouth open in surprise, then grabbed the camera and took a few shots when it was already well past me. As I first got bins on it I could see a darker gray throat extending very slightly onto the upper breast, a paler gray belly, and slightly darker undertail coverts and uniformly dark underwings. It appeared to be an adult female, a juvenile would have had a paler belly and shown faint streaking.
       -- Also seen: Indigo Bunting. Previously reported. The flight call was obviously longer than that of the LAZB. No signs of hybridization. Camera was being obnoxious so I had to use manual focus and the bird was far so doc shots only. Appears to have funky molt going on like typical of Passerinas.

I heard the stress calls overhead and turned to watch the falcon grapple with its prey (that I could not identify) in the air, ultimately grasping it by the legs and carrying to a cliff area nearby where it positioned its wings awkwardly over the bird for a few minutes until the bird stopped calling. At this point the falcon stood up and carried its prey behind a clump of grass away from my field of view.

Mostly gray bird about robin sized with long tail and medium sized curved bill, bird has large white patches on wings and tail which are easily seen when bird is flying. Bird sometimes will sing all night long if neighbors leave lights on which happens a lot. I have heard it mimic most of the larger birders in the area including Killdeer, E. Starling, W. Kingbird, A. Robin, Bullock's Oriole, A. Kestrel, W. Meadowlark, and both Brewer's & RW Blackbirds.

Fai Eva (24 2018) - [Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Sandy, UT] - CANADA JAY (Rocky Mts.). Yes we saw them on the top of the snow bird ski resort. On the very top of the tram line. They are pale grey almost white belly. The wings are definitely pale grey. There is a tint of beige brown color.. There is a distinct black eye streak mark. Unfortunately I am not able to take pictures. There were three of them flying from one pine tree to another, making quite a lot of noise. I don’t think they are snow bunting because the wings are not black. There is a slight chance they are McKay's bunting. But there is a distinct black eye streak. Note that the back of the head is not black. The only thing clearly black is the eye streak.

Paul Gardner (19 Jul 2018) - [Left Fork off Ephraim Canyon] - Ruffed Grouse. I heard these birds calling quietly to one another. It was a hen or two calling little ones. I stood quietly listened. When they couldn't take the stress any more, two adults flushed. I walked closer to where they had been in the vegetation within an aspen grove. Young flushed. When I see Ruffed Grouse they are often in pairs. They are not rare here. American Three-toed Woodpeckers, Williamson's Sapsuckers, Northern Goshawks are rare. I would classify Ruffed Grouse as uncommon.

No white on the bird, unlike the Violet-green Swallows and White-throated Swifts it was flying near. It was a great evening for the lighting. The lack of white was quite obvious when it would fly down below the ridge and along the rock face. Only then was I certain of the ID. Flight was quite obviously different as well.

Kristin Purdy (1 Jul 2018) - [Snowbasin Ski Resort] - Brewer's Sparrow. All within the Porcupine Cirque in a sagebrush-steppe area at 8,900 feet or higher, except one at around 8,300 ft. Song a series of buzzy, metallic trills. One bird visible because it sang from a chokecherry shrub next to the trail. Small, brown-gray underwhelming sparrow with a small bill.
