Bryant Olsen  (29 Aug 20127) - [Willard Bay SP] - Curlew Sandpiper. Not sure what to make of this shorebird. Very intense deep red breast stood out like a sore thumb. There were many Dowitchers still in breeding plumage showing an orange color, but none matched the color of this bird. Only thing that matches this is a breeding plumage Curlew Sandpiper. After watching for 5 minutes in the scope, other birds walked infront of it, and then some birds flushed and I was unable to relocate. I never saw this birds bill or back or legs, only tucked up among the Dowitchers. It doesn't sit well with me that the bird seems to be the same size and proportions as the Dowitchers, should be smaller bodied and longer legs, but very obscured among the thousands of sleeping Dowitchers.

Jay Carlisle (8 Aug 20127) - [Willard Bay - North Spur] - Short-billed Dowitcher. Saw 1 adult at close range - 95% molted into gray non-breeding plumage and could see tail with ~50% white. Later heard at least 2 "tu-tu-tu" calls when large LBDO flock flew (& no yellowlegs around this flock for vocal confusion :-).

Tom Wuenschell (7 Aug 2017) - [Willard, UT area] - Common Poorwill. This bird was about 2 feet from the hiking trail in sparse dry grass, in the shade of a tall Utah juniper on a west facing slope. It flushed and flew as I approached, dark brown mottled all over, big head with a neckless appearance, short broad tail with white corners at the tail end, round short wings. It quickly flew low in a curving zig zag flight over some nearby Gambel oak scrub and disappeared around the corner of the trail. Rare daytime sighting.

Cullen Clark (23 Aug 2017) - [Logan River - Icon Trail] - Golden-crowned Sparrow. I am not 100% sure on this bird. I only got brief distant looks through 8x binoculars. When I first saw it from the back I thought it was a House Finch. Then it turned and I saw a gray bill and a central stripe with yellow at the front before it flew down into the brush. I never saw it leave but I waited for about 5 minutes and it never reappeared or vocalized.

Stephen Heinrich (27 Aug 2017) - [west of Taylor Flat Rd] - Northern Goshawk. Rounded a curve in the road and saw ~25 yards ahead a large accipiter on the road. The bird took off and flew away, providing a good view of solid blue-gray upper parts. Buteo sized body, extremely broad wing/secondary flight feathers from leading edge back. Powerful, unhurried wing beats. The bird disappeared over a nearby ridge. We walked to the ridge top, and after scanning for ~10 minutes saw the bird fly out from below the ridge about 300 yds away. Good view again as it flew away with powerful, unhurried wing beats. Cooper's Hawk has slimmer body, narrower wings/front to back secondaries, and more rapid wing beats.

Frank Hall (14 Aug 2017) - [Pruess Reservoir] - Clay-colored Sparrow. Mixed with two Brewer's Sparrows and looking somewhat similar except much more distinctive "face" with darker pattern, smooth buffy-mocha colored breast and a smooth grayish nape, not streaked as in Brewer's. Lores light and sub-loral whitish with dark border. No eye ring. Good long view at about 5-6m with 10X42. I at first took it for a Chipping Sparrow because of the darkish crown but it was clearly not Chipping or Brewer's. The adjacent Brewer's made a nice contrast. Bird was located near willows and salt cedars at north end of reservoir and about 100 m east of inlet channel. Weston Smith (2 Aug 2017) - [East Canyon Reservoir] - Purple Martin. All eight recorded were seen at same time in the state park hanging around large trees between office and feeder area. While watching and photographing six individuals (one ad. male five fem./im.) in one tree an adult male and female/immature were flying over head. I also had three other female/immature birds flying around me at south end while photographing the ducks. I think these were seperate from the others making a total of 11 but can't be for sure.

Jeff Sexton (10 Aug 2017) - [Little Cottonwood Rd] - Black Swift. Continuing birds. After watching tons of swifts fly around the top of the cliffs on north side of road, saw at two different times a swift that looked larger than the others. Long narrow wings, not angled back as much as the white-throated, and much more square appearing tail than white-throated. More easy to tell with binoculars looking through different swifts and getting to compare when next to a white-throated. Took random pictures toward the cliff hoping to try and get a photo accidentally. Couldn't track the bird when I would find it with binos and switch to the camera to get a pic.

Steve Clark (30 Aug 2017) - [Alpine Loop Rd] - Red-eyed Vireo. Stopped for a large flock along the side of the road. After looking out the window of the truck and ID-ing a few, I came across this and jumped out so quick I almost didn't put the truck in park. Immediately what stood out was a larger vireo with a lengthy bill and a distinct, long, white supercilium. It's crown was dark and it had a dark eye-line. White breast with a green back and slightly yellowish sides. Watched for a few seconds two separate times, but was unable to obtain a photo even after an effort.

Eric Huish (9 Aug 2017) - [Stewart Falls] - Black Swift. I sat watching the falls for about 2 hours. At one point 3 swifts came in and flew around for less than a minute. One came close enough that I was able to get a very good look at color and tail shape. The other two looked similar in shape, size and wingbeat but I wasn't able to get such a confident look at them, they were pretty close but backlit. Then they were gone and didn't come back. They didn't make any calls. I am very very experienced at telling swifts from swallows by wingbeat and shape. I ruled out White-throated Swifts by tail shape and body color. I feel there can be some overlap in tail shape but none of the three swifts I saw appeared to show the more narrow pointed tail I would expect on most white-throated swifts. I got a good look at one of the swifts, enough to feel I could see color shades on the body and I couldn't see the white throat or white side patches that a white-throated swift would show.
