Brent Farnsworth (1 Mar 2017) - [Minersville Reservoir] - Cackling Goose. Four small geese in a flock of 64. Sixty were Canada geese, four were cackling. The four had short necks, stubby, triangular bills, and were considerably smaller in size. They were only slightly larger than a mallard which swam through the flock. Wyatt Egelhoff (25 Mar 2017) - [Hickman Flats Rd] - Gunnison Sage-Grouse. Snippets of display vocalizations audible (faintly) from the road atop a hill overlooking the most extensive portion of Sagebrush I could find along the road. Quite distant, but diagnostic low-pitched burbling. Though considering the severe fragmentation of the Sagebrush patches, I can't imagine the metapopulatons will be able to persist in this area over the long run. Without assistance to help mix up the genetic diversity of the various populations I would suspect these birds would prove vulnerable to disease due to genetic bottlenecking.

Leah Lewis (18 Mar 2017) - [Pelican Lake] - Ash-throated Flycatcher. Seen clearly among hay bales. At first I thought it was a Say's Phoebe, but after getting closer for a better view it was clearly an Ash-throated Flycatcher. The head feathers were raised into a perked cap and the reddish tone on the tail was obvious in flight. Did not have a dark head and was overall relatively pale to greenish-yellow in front. Paul Jaussi (28 Mar 2017) - [Quail Creek Reservoir] - White-winged Scoter. We're from Pacific NW. Immediately recognized as juvenile Scoter. Observed from overlook at north end of water, near riparian inlet. Swimming and diving for 5 minutes. Large, broad white wing patches when it flew in SE direction.

Neil Paprocki (26 Mar 2017) - [Beaver Dam Slope - East of Hwy 91] - Bendire's Thrasher. Photos and heard singing at close range. Suitable habitat for the species - grassier and more open than most of the Beaver Dam Slope. Bird ranged widely over this area from within 100m of eastern foothills to as close as 100m east of road. Pinned location more or less in the middle of where I saw/heard the bird for roughly 45 minutes, singing mainly from tops of Joshua Trees. Very vocal.

Randy and Pam Peterson (2 Mar 2017) - [Red Cliffs Desert Reserve] - Short-eared Owl. Flew from ground near base of 6' creosote bush 20 feet off spur of Pioneer Hills trail northeast of Owens Loop trailhead by Red Hills Parkway. Topo coordinates were 37.125126, -113.575252. Buff/cream underside with distinct dark wingtips and dark bars on wrists. Observed in flight for about 10 seconds at a height of 20-30 feet until it flew about 1/4 mile to the NE. Clearly larger, paler underside and more pointed wings than Western Screech-Owl. Underside overall coloring similar to Barn Owl, but the distinct dark wing tips and wrist bars caused us to identify it as a Short-eared Owl. Time of observation was about 10:30 am.
