While watching a flock of Canada geese in a field adjacent to the preserve, two Sandhill cranes flew in and landed. Yes, Sandhill cranes this time of year are extremely rare, but two did show up in my group for the Christmas Bird Count in the preserve on December 20. Not sure if these two are different birds that are passing through or the same ones and are hanging around for the winter.

Calls were easy to hear and dark bodies w/ white backs were visible against dark trees. I stood to look for 5 minutes or more. I had not binoculars, but saw enough closer individuals to be confident that they were evening grosbeaks. They were also very vocal and the chirp and trill is distinct.

This eastern bird was in company with 2 CAFI and was notably lighter than the female type CAFI. Lack of an eye-ring or arcs, stubby bill with a "pug-face" look, blurry streaks on chest and sides, and a notably forked tail. The light brown color was more in line with a HOFI than the dark and stark pattern of a CAFI. 40 species:
