CACHE COUNTY

Andrew Kleinhesselink (30 October 2015) - [Canal Trail] -  Red Crossbill (Western Hemlock or type 3) Loxia curvirostra (type 3). Came down to drink at the springs near the steps that head down to 1066 Canyon Road. Nothing remarkable about their appearance--typical red-crossbills. I recorded their calls as they flew off with my iPhone. A spectrogram of their calls indicates that they were a flock of type 3 crossbills which is unexpected in Utah. I emailed with Ryan O'Donnell about this and he indicated that other birders have reported type 3 crossbills in AZ this year. Perhaps there is an irruption of this type beyond their normal range this year.

Kylynn Clare (11 October 2015) - [Lisbon Valley-LaSal Mountains] - Long-eared Owl (American):
This bird was heard and had some odd variations in its call. It sounded as though it was disturbed or got excited by something and made occasional "squee" calls that were interspersed with the familiar low-pitched "whoo" sound. We were in an isolated area, camping, and there were no cars or other people around. The owl made some calls for a time and then stopped abruptly. We did not hear it call again the rest of the night. The call came from ~400 yards from our campsite. I double checked on my iBird Pro app to ensure that this was the species of owl I was hearing and there were no other owl calls that sounded remotely similar to the one we heard. We went out the next morning in the general direction of where we heard the call come from but did not find any evidence of owls in the area (though we did not spend much time looking).

First heard three drumming in trees fairly close to each other. As I watching one of the birds, four more flew into the tree. They acted like juveniles--lots of wing flapping, calling and landing close to the original bird in the tree. The drumming in the other two trees continued after the next four arrived.
