Bryant Olsen (27 July 2015) - [Alta] - I've just
finished up my field season of BBS at Atla, here are some highlights:
-- At least 4 male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS on territory during
the month of June up Grizzly Gulch.
-- Many BLACK ROSY-FINCHES in the alpine ridge line
between Sugarloaf and Devil's Castle peaks, including watching a food delivery
to a nest in a crack on a cliff.
-- An AMERICAN PIPIT also along the same alpine ridge
line. Very few summer records for them in the alpine of SL county
-- Many RED CROSSBILLS. There seems to be a good crop
of Spruce cones ripening up this summer, and the Crossbills have moved in to
take advantage of them. One morning I'm fairly certain I heard a WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILL mixed in with a flock of Reds
-- On my last BBS, I had a great look at an immature
NORTHERN GOSHAWK
-- Although they were a little late in arriving in good
numbers this year, the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS have now moved in and taken
over the flower fields, as well as the hummingbird feeders I put up.
Kris Purdy (27 July 2015) - [Albion Basin, Alta]...Favorite bird of Wednesday’s trip was a singing male
russet Pine Grosbeak at the tippy-top of a spruce or fir; when he swooped
to half the height and landed again on conifer branches in shady woodland
dappled with sunlight, I saw him beautifully, rosily, satisfyingly; a rosy bloom
landed upon forest green needled branches...
