- Yes, it’s possible to be a fair weather birder waiting inside your vehicle for
a deluge to subside and log a rare bird, in this case, a LEAST FLYCATCHER
at Willard Bay State Park, Box Elder County. That was the scenario this morning
in the park as I waited for a drenching storm cell to clear and I rolled down my
window a bit. Two “che-beks” later, I was pretty pleased. The bird called from
Willow Campground Loop sites 6-7, and also ventured farther north into the
dense, mature and very tall cottonwoods along the nature trail known for
harboring owls in the winter.

Frank Howe (24 May 2015) [Lewis's Woodpecker
at 450 North 700 East in Hyde Park] : "... breast and head color (red) clearly
seen; exhibited flycatching behavior frequently during 1/2 hour observation"
Andrew Kleinhesselink (20 May 2015) [Great-tailed
Grackle at the Logan Landfill] : "Big all black bird with long
slightly curved beak and long tail. Much bigger than any common blackbirds we
have here and seemed larger with a longer bill than Common Grackle. Occasionally
fanned tail out in display. Seen right past the entrance kiosk at the landfill.
it was hanging out by the side of a big puddle on the side of the road and then
flew up to a small cottonwood below the main landfill..."
Andrew Kleinhesselink (20 May 2015) [Broad-winged
Hawk at Rendezvous Park] : "Flew over being mobbed by robins. Buteo with
streaked and barred underside markings. Distinctive white tail band."
Andrew Kleinhesselink (13 May 2015) [Yellow-breasted
Chat on the Canal Trail] : "Heard while running. Singing and calling
from the dense thicket behind the greenhouses. Distinctive calls. I wanted to
confirm it wasn't a catbird so I pished. It popped up briefly and I saw a
largish songbird with a yellow underside and a greenish back. I didn't have
binoculars to observe other details well. This is a bit on the early side for
this species here."

Cullen Clark (9 May 2015) [Glossy Ibis at
Hyde Park Lane] : (Photos were taken of possibly two individuals).
Ryan O'Donnell (9 May 2015) [Whimbrel at
Amalga Barrens] : "Great side-by-side comparisons with Long-billed Curlew made
the cooler, grayer color; bold head stripes; relatively shorter bill; and
smaller overall size of the Whimbrel quite evident. Subspecies was confirmed
when the bird was seen in flight: the rump and upper tail did not contrast with
the back or tertials..."
Mike Fish (4 May 2015) [Common Grackle at
the Logan Fish Hatchery Pond] : "On the side of the road not far from
where I parked. The large bill, tail, and size were apparent over the Brewers
that were also present. The tail was rounded at the end as compared to the
brewers. The bright yellow eye was easy to see. This bird has been seen there
for a few days now."
Andrew Kleinhesselink (3 May 2015) [Nashville
Warbler on the Canal Trail] : "Seen well. Bright yellow belly and
undertail coverts. Green back and wings. White eye-ring. Gray hood.
Distinguished from Virginia's by yellow on throat and green back. Silently
foraging with the black-throated gray warbler."
Sam Robertson (1 May 2015) [Great Egret at
Cutler Marsh -- Boat Launch Area] : "Spotted large white bird on my way home. It
had a large yellow bill black legs and much bigger than a cattle or snowy
egret."

Marcy Hafner (11 May 2015) ...While counting birds
this Saturday for the International Migratory Bird Day, my group of six people
observed a black-billed cuckoo in Moab on the border of the Scott M.
Matheson wetland preserve. This bird is not on the preserve's checklist, but I
did find it on a checklist for the birds of Utah with the request for more
documentation so I'm sending this on to you. Three people in my group are
knowledgeable birders and we all confirmed this sighting. Unfortunately we were
unable to get any good photos. We were able, however, to observe it for at least
15 minutes. The bill was pure black unlike the yellow-billed, which has a mostly
yellow bill. It had no rufous in the primaries and the white spots in the tail
were small and indistinct, unlike the large distinctive white large spots of the
yellow-billed...

Austin Spence (10 May 2015) - [Virgin River Trail]

head, light underside. Found in the riverside Virgin River trail hopping around
the bottom of the plants by the riverside.
Rick Fridell (9 May 2015) - [Quail Creek Reservoir]
- This morning (5/9), the Sommerfelds located a flamingo at Quail Creek State
Park, Washington Co. We were extremely surprised to watch this bird swimming in
the middle of the reservoir with a large raft of Western Grebes. None of us have
much experience with flamingos, but we didn't know they swim around in deep
water. It remained quite a ways out in the middle of the reservoir, but we think
it must be a Lesser Flamingo due to what appeared to be an all dark bill
and dark extending up around the eye. Kevin and Pam Wheeler just relocated it in
the same area with the same flock of grebes this afternoon 2:40 to 3:00 ish.
Pretty cool to see this exotic bird here in SW Utah.
Shaun Langston (9 May 2015) - [Tonaquint Park] -
BLACKPOLL WARBLER. Continuing. Black-capped (like the chickadee), white
cheeks and white underneath with dark streaks on the flanks. Seen between the
cemetery and the pond. Got good looks for about 3 seconds before it disappeared.
Rick Fridell (8 May 2015) - [Tonaquint Park] - Today I
broke a long birding fast and visited Tonaquint Park in St. George. There was a
lot of warbler activity highlighted by a couple nice surprises including a male
Blackpoll Warbler and a Northern Waterthrush. There was also a
couple Myrtle Warblers with a flock of Audubon's Yellow-rumps, a male
Wilson's Warbler, an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Common Yellowthroat
and several Yellow Warblers. The blackpoll was frequenting the strip of trees
between the pond and cemetery and the waterthrush was in the dense wet pond
outflow area.
