Mike Taylor (27 Mar 2015) [Bushtits
continuing at Steel Canyon] "...Heard, seen and photographed. Small grey
excitable bird with brown cap.."
Ryan O'Donnell, and Andrew Durso (26
Mar 2015) [A Least Sandpiper, a Thayer's Gull and a Lesser
Black-backed Gull at the Logan Sewage Lagoons] Least Sandpiper:
"Early, but the most likely peep this time of year. Seen in flight only: small
and brown (initially mistaken for Northern Rough-winged Swallow), but with
medium-long palish-based bill (too short for Western Sandpiper, too pale for
WESA and Semipalmated Sandpiper)..." Thayer's Gull: "Adults, confirmed by
rounded heads, slender and relatively short bills, but body size somewhat larger
than adjacent California Gulls and mantle color paler than CAGU. Dusky eye
color. Large white apical spots in dark gray/blackish primaries..."
Lesser Black-backed Gull: "Adult, slightly larger than adjacent California
Gulls with mantle about the same shade or slightly darker. Bright pale eye. Some
dusky smudging near the red spot on the bill, perhaps indicating fourth cycle.
Seemed a bit shaggy around the throat and head, perhaps molting body feathers or
maybe unhealthy. Some streaking remaining on the head, but not much. Poor
distant digiscoped photo taken, shows pale eye and long straight-sided bill..."
Ryan O'Donnell, Leah
Lewis and Andrew Durso (21 Mar 2015) [Two Juniper Titmice at Steel
Canyon] "Two singing males, plus a third bird. Rare in Cache County but
several records from this location in recent years..." [and a pair of Bushtits]
"Rare in Cache County but several records from this location in recent years.
Pair together. Subspecies of one confirmed by brown cheek contrasting with
grayish crown; subspecies of second one assumed by location..."
Ryan O'Donnell, Leah
Lewis and Andrew Durso (21 Mar 2015) [Harris's Sparrow at PacificCorp
2600N Walk-In Access to Cutler Marsh] "Seen in several locations in the
immediate vicinity of the parking area, mostly associating with a mixed flock of
sparrows. Probably a first-spring (second calendar year) male given singing
behavior plus white mottling in the throat. In active body molt. Ninth county
record in eBird, and first March county record. My 100th species in the county
this year...(RPO)"

Rick MacDonald (17 Mar 2015) [a Black Phoebe
at Arches NP - Courthouse Wash ] "I saw it from the back first. All black
- no contrast between tail and back. Smallish flycatcher only slightly larger
than the juncos in the same tree. It flew to a limb above the flowing creek and
I got a look at its white belly. Interestingly, I saw a Black phoebe in here
last April."
Stephen Heinrich (15 Mar 2015) [a Red-naped
Sapsucker on Castle Creek Lane (Annie and Ed's) ] "Early regular
resident. 2nd I've seen this year."
Rick MacDonals (10 Mar 2015) [an early Sage
Thrasher on Klondile Bluffs Road ] "I realize it might be bit
early for a Sage thrasher but It flushed from a shrub and landed on a wire
fence. I got a good look with binoculars. There may have been two as another
bird moved from one shrub to another but stayed hidden and I couldn't get a good
look at that one. It wasn't a mockingbird, definitely a thrasher. Coincidently,
I had seen a Sage thrasher at this same location last spring."
Stephen Heinrich (8 Mar 2015) [a Red-naped
Sapsucker at Stikpig ] "My 1st for the year. In a small grove of
pines, many of which are utterly riddled with the classic, horizontal patterns
of holes that sapsuckers do. Good views at 30' with 8x42 bins. Complete red chin
and throat. Red on nape."
Also a
Long-eared Owl. Sat for 3/4 of an hour in the blind-zuki before the bird
flew out of the trees. Good naked-eye views at 100 yards, silhouetted in the
last color on the horizon. Buoyant flight and more delicate form than the blunt
shape and direct flight of the Great-horned Owl.

Mandarin Duck
Bryant Olsen (15 Mar 2015) - [SLC Airport] -
This morning I saw 4 species of Geese in the fields north of the SLC Airport,
first a flock of 8 SNOW GEESE with 1 little ROSS'S mixed in by the
Bald Eagle nest, then later I found 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE mixed
in with many Canadas in fields just west of the Jordan River by the South Davis
sewer treatment plant. Now I just need to find a Cackler by the end of the day
to have 5 geese in one day. Good Birding.
Eric Peterson (10 Mar 20145) - I toured a friend from Dallas today and
took her up to the mountain to try and catch some of our great mountain birds.
We started by going up Big Cottonwood Canyon. We stopped at a turnout with a
walk over bridge and got some great looks at some American Dippers. We
then headed up to Brighton and stopped by Silver Lake. I could hear Pine
Grosbeaks but couldn't find them. We drove around the loop and the last house in
the loop had a feeder out with lots of Pine Grosbeaks. I counted 6 at one
time. There were also Mountain Chickadees and RB Nuthatches. We
then headed up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Alta Town Feeders. The Rosy
Finches stayed up in the trees while we were there but we found both Gray
Crowned sub-species and a Black. There were also 5 Clark's
Nutcrackers on the suet feeders. That is where all your food is going
Bryant. We then stopped by Cottonwood Regional Park to see if we could find the
Mandarin Duck. He was there front and center. I think Rich and crew need
to let him know he is not a Mallard, because he was courting a female Mallard.
He was very accommodating. We then walked straight back and ran into the
Harlen's Hawk. He was most accommodating and we were able to get some great
looks of him perched in the lone tree in the field. Other than it being scary
warm it was a great day.

Shawn Langston (18 Mar 2015) - [Virgin River Trail]
- Swamp Sparrow. I assume this is the continuing bird from this winter
but I can't say for sure. Seen under the bridge on river left. Rufous crown,
white throat bordered by distinct malar stripes, rufous wings, grayish flanks,
and dark streaks on back. Plumage seemed fresher than when I saw it last. I only
got a brief look before it flew into dense vegetation where it stayed.

Mike Hearell (10 Mar 2015)- Had a few FOY Weber County
birds at the North Access to Ogden Bay this evening. A couple of the highlights
were the continuing LEAST SANDPIPER, 2 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, both
species (Greater and Lesser) of YELLOWLEGS, and 2 breeding
plumage AMERICAN AVOCETS. Nice to see the new arrivals and have the
anticipation of what tomorrow may bring!
Mike Hearell (7 Mar 2015) - Here are some of the notable birds found around
Weber County over the last few days. NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL and BLACK
ROSY-FINCH at Powder Mountain. Both of these species have been seen off and
on all Winter long. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Pioneer Rd (1500 N)
Marsh. This afternoon Taylor Abbott and I visited the North Access of Ogden Bay
WMA where the highlights were a FOY GREATER YELLOWLEGS, approx 25
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, an early SAVANNAH SPARROW and LEAST
SANDPIPER.
Kris Purdy (7 Mar 2015) - I was at Beus Park in
Ogden, Weber County yesterday, and saw the same old PACIFIC WREN that’s
wintered there. The bird was using the blackberry vines near the south feeder. I
saw him twice within about 20 minutes while I was standing on the paved path and
the bird was scampering through the vines only a couple feet off the path.
Today, I hiked in North Fork Park with a friend and came across a flock of 6-10
EVENING GROSBEAKS. It was like paradise in that park today. Actually,
it’s like paradise in that park every day. My hiking buddy and I heard and then
saw a flock of about 40 Sandhill Cranes circling over Ogden Valley.
