Bryant Olsen (1 Feb 2015) - [Lee Kay Ponds] - Today on our GSLA Field Trip, we found an immature GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Lee Kay, on the large west pond. But what was more amazing was the number of CACKLING GEESE there,20+, and looking through the photos the majority appear to have been Taverner's, with a few Minima. After the field trip, I swung by Redwood Trailhead on the Jordan River and re-found the hybrid drake COMMON GOLDENEYE X HOODED MERGANSER. There were many BARROW'S and COMMON GOLDENEYE,as well as a drake HOODED MERGANSER for nice comparisons. Very cool duck. Also, early in the morning in Sugarhouse I had a flyover flock of Canada Geese, with one little ROSS'S GOOSE in-tow. With all these waterfowl moving, you'd think it was spring or something, and it certainly felt like it today.

Kris Purdy (28 Feb 2015) - [North Park] - Yesterday, I headed to North Fork Park in Weber County with my dog to get in a short walk even though snow was forecast. Snow was blanketing the place when we arrived so thickly it seemed ironic that Ogden Nordic had to end for this winter grooming the park’s ski tracks on the road. But there was life in that park. A quarter-mile from the entrance a silent group of robins roosted in a hawthorn shrub right next to the road. But they didn’t move as we closed in, and then I realized their silhouette wasn’t quite right for robins, and then their true identity as PINE GROSBEAKS struck me. Even though they’ve used the lower elevations in the park in past winters, Pine Grosbeaks at 5,700 feet of elevation is always a surprise. All the hawthorns in the park have been stripped bare of fruit recently, likely due to the persistent wind events of the last couple weeks. The grosbeaks were snipping buds as they barely moved in the section of the canopy that each bird had claimed. I decided to hold off marking the bush with flagging tape for prospective grosbeak-seekers so I wouldn’t disturb the birds, and slowly moved past them so they wouldn’t flush. I thought I’d tie one on, so to speak, on the return trip. The closest female Pine Grosbeak continued to snip off buds as I tied the flagging tape about 4 feet from her perch. We left them then and quietly swished our way back to the entrance.

Mike Hearell (2 Feb 2015) - [West Weber] - Canada Goose, Tundra Swan, Ring-necked Pheasant, Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl, Short-eared Owl, Song Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird
