DAVIS COUNTY

Joel Beyer (29 Sep 2013) -  Flammulated Owl at Garr Ranch this morning. Thanks to Katie for showing us this wonderful bird!

Bryant Olsen (25 Sep 2013) - Today on the Antelope Island Causeway, we found 3! SABINE'S GULLS. 1 on the beach northeast of the monument by the marina,...
--Earlier at Farmington bay we saw some good birds, including the biggest flock of PECTORAL SANDPIPERS I've ever seen, 50+ in one flock, plus several more smaller groups. This was just west of the 4 way. Also saw 1 COMMON TERN, and lots of other shorebirds. Great looks at a VIRGINIA RAIL too. Also saw several WILSON'S SNIPE, including 2 doing this weird erratic dancing behavior in the mud on the side of the road in the rain, never seen Snipe dance before.

Joel Beyer (22 Sep 2013) - This morning there was a juvenile Sabine's Gull on the Antelope Island Causeway. It was easily seen from the monument parking lot, which is just east of the marina. A Pectoral Sandpiper and 50 Black-bellied Plover were also seen along the causeway.

Kendell Watkins (14 Sep 2013) - My dad and I were just watching a possible RED-EYED VIREO at Garr Ranch. It was in a large tree just north of the house with the hummingbird feeders... Also a possible Philadelphia Vireo. Also of note at the ranch I briefly saw and heard a Bewick's Wren just south of the wood pile, a single Swainson's Thrush, Nashville, Townsend's, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Macgilivray's, Orange-crowned, and Virginia's Warblers, many Cassin's Vireos, and Hammond's, Cordilleran, Dusky, Willow, and Gray Flycatchers...

Cindy Sommerfeld (13 Sep 2013) - Saw a Black-and- white Warbler at Garr Ranch today...We also saw a Calliope Hummingbird hanging around the sunflowers on the wood pile.

Bryant Olsen (10 Sep 2013) - Saw 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at Glovers Ponds in Farmington.

Bryant Olsen (10 Sep 2013) - Earlier today, around noon, I saw an Empidonax flycatcher that looked a lot like a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER at Garr ranch, very yellow like a Cordilleran, but with a very round complete eye-ring...The place was also crawling with Wablers,Vireos, RC Kinglets and Sparrows, including 2 CASSIN'S VIREO,1 TOWNSEND'S WARBLER,1 NASHVILLE WARBLER, and WILSON'S WARBLERS everywhere.

Jack Binch (7 Sep 2013) - Bob Huntington and I went up to Bountiful Peak this morning. Not too many raptors, but a lot of birds...
--The best part of the trip was the birds just north of the parking lot: Lazuli Bunting, Clark's Nutcrackers, several Townsend's Warblers, lots of Townsend's Solitaires...Macgillivray's Warbler, Mountain Bluebird,...possible Bushtit, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Green-tailed Towhee, White-throated Swift, Barn Swallow, Violet-Green Swallow, and Brewer's Sparrow....

Cindy Sommerfeld (6 Sep 2013) - Today the Island was pretty birdie. Just not a wide variety. Species count was 71.  [highlights] ...Virginia Rail, Sora...Baird's Sandpiper...Great Horned Owl, Burrowing Owl, Common Nighthawk... Cassin's Vireo...Swainson's Thrush... Nashville Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Townsend's Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Wilson's Warbler...Lazuli Bunting...

GARFIELD COUNTY

Larry Tripp (28 Sep 2013) - I've had a couple good birds at my new home at the Bullberry Inn in Tropic, Garfield County this fall. The best was a HY male Ruby-throated Hummingbird that has been at my feeder today. The bird was still around as of 6:30 this evening. The other birds of note in Sept. have been a Tennessee Warbler, a Brown Thrasher and 2 different sighting of Broad-winged Hawks. 1 single bird and a group of 3.

KANE COUNTY

Colby Newman (27 Sep 2013) - Just a quick note, I was down in the Bullfrog/Hite area around Lake Powell the past couple of days.  Birding was not the primary focus, but I was able to check the Bullfrog Marina for birds with the main highlight being a juvenile Sabine's Gull near the boat launch and several terns (two of which were Forster's Terns) yesterday.

SALT LAKE COUNTY

Rich Young (24 Sep 2013) - Tennessee Warbler at Big Cottonwood Park in Holladay UT.,  a few hundred yards in from the Mount Olympus Senior Center building. [ID'd as a first fall bird by Mark Stackhouse].

Matthew Wallace (21 Sep 2013)- Just after sunset I heard a whole lot of Crows, so I went outside to see what all the commotion was about. They were making quite a racket. I had the radio on inside and I could hear them through that. We have a couple of resident Crows, but this was much larger, the largest group of American Crows I've seen here in quite a while. There were maybe 50, maybe more, a large group or murder to be sure.

Matthew Wallace (18 Sep 2013) - At just past Noon I was outside brushing the dog when I heard the familiar sounds of Sandhill Cranes. Three of them were flying high overhead over my house in the East Millcreek area. They were heading roughly SSE. The annual fall migration of the Cranes is definitely on. And, I think it's safe to say, summer is over with the Sandhill migration a sure sign.

Jeff Cooper (14 Sep 2013) -  Hit the SL International Center before work and was rained out. I went after work and ended up in more rain. I hid my car in a parking garage for about ten minutes to escape a hail storm. I didn't give up and did end up finding and photographing two fun birds, Common Nighthawk and Wilson's Snipe. The snipe were engaged in behavior I'd never witnessed before.

Mike Hearell (11 Sep 2013) - Just had a flock of almost 40 Pinyon Jays fly over. I'm at approx 1300 E and Sego Lilly Dr in Sandy. They were heading ENE.

SAN JUAN COUNTY

Jim Hook (10 Sep 2013) - [Bluff, UT] -  I watched an American White Pelican circle about 4 revolutions over the Post Office at noon in Bluff on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at about 100’ and then glide east up the San Juan River. I didn’t have field glasses but could easily see all white with lots of black on the wings, big bird, neck pulled back into a tight “s”, even could see orange bill. I called several non-birder types (including the post master) out of the Post Office to look and though not as excited as I, they could easily see the markings I was pointing out.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Dave Hanscom (28 Sep 2013) - A group of 8 Long-billed Dowitchers were feeding along the south shore of Rockport Reservoir, a bit west of the inlet, this afternoon. Also, there was a lone Red-necked Phalarope nearby today.

Dave Hanscom (17 Sep 2013) - There were three Common Loons at Rockport this afternoon, along with the first Ruddy Ducks of the fall. Also three Snowy Egrets, which are pretty unusual for the reservoir at any time of year.

Dave Hanscom (10 Sep 2013) - A flock of at least 10 Pectoral Sandpipers were at the north end of
Rockport Reservoir this afternoon, near the inlet where the Pelicans were hanging out. Also, on the west side, between the water and the road, was a nice flock of Yellow-rumps, Gnatcatchers, Chickadees, and one Black-throated Gray Warbler.

UTAH COUNTY

Eric Huish
(30 Sep 2013) - Merrill Webb reported seeing an immature Red-necked Grebe at the Provo Airport Dike today. He said it was in the moat just east of the southwest corner. He saw it at about 3:30 pm. I will be looking for it first thing in the morning!

Eric Huish (28 Sep 2013) - I went birding with Jeff Cooper this morning (Sept 28). We birded the Lincoln Point area....
--While driving along 6400 South west of 3200 West in North Benjamin we stopped at the large Turkey Vulture roost to take photos. At one point several flew at once. Conservative count was 46. West of the Turkey Vultures we spotted a Cattle Egret that flew up into a tree and posed for photos.
--Next we stopped at Lincoln Beach and the Boat Harbor. Just north of the North Jetty we found a Lesser Black-backed Gull. ...We did get close views of a Pectoral Sandpiper. And the bushes in that area had several warblers including 2 Nashville Warblers and a possible rare warbler we never got a good look at...
--We continued on the road south of the Sabine's. Nothing too exciting. A few miles down we found a Bewick's Wren. We looked for the Sabine's again on our way back but it had left that spot. On our way home we passed River Lane. From the highway we spotted a Merlin on a tree by the river.

Eric Huish (27 Sep 2013) - There is a immature Sabines Gull at Lincoln Point in Utah County. Along the lakeshore about a mile west of the point...

Bryan Shirley (23 Sep 2013) - Lots of stuff at the mouth of the Spanish Fork River today (end of river lane). Western and Least Sandpipers, 1 Snowy Plover... About 200 yards east of the mouth of the river there were 3 Black-bellied Plovers...

Eric Huish
(21 Sep 2013) - This morning 10 Utah County Birders met and birded along Squaw Peak Road ...Best birds were Cassin's Vireo and a few Clark's Nutcrackers...

Eric Huish (17 Sep 2013) - I made a quick stop at Lindon Beach this afternoon. There was a Common Tern flying around over the south end of the settling pond with a couple of Forester's Terns. Commons can be hard to find in Utah County.

Eric Huish
(16 Sep 2013) - I birded the Provo Airport Dike early this morning before work. I started at the north end. It was still pretty dark when I got there. There was a pair of Western Screech-Owls calling near the Center Street Bridge. I sat and listened to them for a while. Just north of the West extension I heard a pair of Great Horned Owls hooting.

Eric Huish (15 Sep 2013) - Six Utah County Birders met yesterday for a trip to Burraston Ponds (Juab County) led by Bryan Shirley. We saw several birds at Burraston Ponds. My favorite were two Soras out in the open giving us great views and a fly-over Peregrine Falcon.
...At Warm Springs our most interesting bird was a Juniper Titmouse that seemed out of place without any junipers around.

Eric Huish (15 Sep 2013) - I birded River Lane this morning (9/15) (Utah County).  Nothing rare but I did get good views of 9 species of warblers (Orange-crowned, Nashville, Virginia's, MacGillivray's, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Gray, Townsend's and Wilson's Warbler).  There are large flocks of Vesper Sparrow down along Swede Lane and River Lane.  I have never seen such large flocks of Vespers before.  On Friday I saw 40 all together in about a 40 foot stretch.
   --River Lane:...???Grasshopper Sparrow...

Eric Huish (10 Sep 2013) - I birded Lindon Beach this morning (Sept 4). Along the shoreline, a bit south of Lindon Beach, was a little sandbar island with a bunch of Caspian Terns and just south of them there was a Common Tern sitting on a rock. Common Terns can be hard to find in Utah County. It has been a few years since my last sighting.
--I birded the east and south side of the Provo Airport Dike early yesterday morning. Shorebirds continue west of the south extension. One of the Stilt Sandpipers is still there...
--On my way out to Lincoln Point I birded Swede Lane. I was early and it was still dark out. I heard a Great Horned Owl calling near the downed barn. At the end of Swede Lane, around the trees just before the boat launch area, I had two Barn Owls flying around me...

Jeff Cooper (9 Sep 2013)  - Eric Huish and I enjoyed a nice mountain drive along Squaw Peak Road Saturday. We were about 6000 feet above Provo and enjoyed great scenery and several bird surprises. Finding what we believe were three sibling juvenile Cooper's Hawks and a small flock of Golden-crowned Kinglets was thrilling and pleasant respectively...
    --List: [highlights] Cooper's Hawk (juveniles),...Clark's Nutcracker...Golden-crowned Kinglet...Townsend's Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee...

Jeff Cooper (7 Sep 2013)- Green Heron. Provo Airport Dike, stretch of water west of south extension of dike.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Merill Webb (20 Sep 2013) - [Lytle Ranch] - Two Dickcissels around noon, in the milo fields, north of the main building toward the pond. There is lots of food (and bird activity) and so they will probably stick around for a while. Also saw a Red-shouldered Hawk around the same time. Earlier in the morning, around 9, saw an American Redstart south along the stream, but it seemed to be moving out of the area. (less likely to still be around).

WEBER COUNTY

Paul Higgins (22 Sep 2013) - I hiked around the top of the North Fork of the Ogden River (Cold Water Canyon) this morning, quite a few birds. Highlights for me were Lewis' Woodpeckers, Pine Grosbeaks and Dusky Grouse.

Pat Bausman (15 Sep 2013) - We had a Spotted Towhee in our yard this evening, also - adult male. We usually get one or two in the dead of winter; this is very early.

Mike Hearell (9 Sep 2013) - Black-crowned Night Heron while standing in a dry creek bed in a wooded area. Weber, Utah.

Kris Purdy (8 Sep 2013) - I’ve been pleased to host a hatch-year male Calliiope Hummingbird at my feeders in Ogden over the past few days. This bird’s appearance continues what’s been a fantastic fall season for hummingbirds, peaking in about the third week of August with four species in the yard, multiple Rufous trying to defend each of six feeders, and up to two Calliopes at a time at one particular feeder. My yard population seemed to leave en masse overnight on August 20 with straggling Rufous at first and now, mostly Black-chinned plus the recent Calliope appearing.
